KIFTY YEARS AGO i Taken from the files of April 7, " The week of April 10 to 16 has been set aside by the McHenry KTwanis club as "Clean-Up" week, according to an an nouncement made by Peter W. Frett, chairman of the Agricultural committee of that organization. A clean city is a healthy city. A street cleaner is employed by the city council and he has been doing some good work during the past few weeks. There is still much to be done in the streets, but this will be taken care of just as rapidly as possible. A.P. Freund, proprietor of the McHenry Sand & Ex cavating Co., has donated twenty loads of sand for the bathing beach on Fox river, north of the bridge. This sand .was badly needed for the beach and will greatly improve this playground for the children of McHenry. The wily Dan Cupid of bow and arrow fame, fired an arrow, not from the classical bow, but from a moving picture machine, and when the ensuing crackle and humming of the dynamo had been subdued, he reported results namely, the marriage of the moving picture operator, Lee Woodward and Miss Violet Vycital, a popular McHenry couple. The ceremony was performed Monday evening, April 4, at 9 o'clock in the operator's booth at the Empire theatre with Rev. C.W Loughlin, pastor of the M E church, speaking the words that made the happy couple man and wife. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 8 1937) The annual Boy Scout drive will open in McHenry on Thursday morning April 15, when it is hoped that the local quota of $225 will be reached or exceeded in voluntary sub scriptions John A. Bolger is the general chairman of the drive for funds, C.J Reihansperger is the finance officer, Ray McGee is chairman of the special gifts committee and Earl Walsh is heading the committee on arrangements. The local Boy Scout troop is sponsored by McHenry Post of the American Legion and Leo Stilling is the troop committee chairman , i /J^e Engeln building on Riverside .driye is undergoing, extensive alterations * and improvements, preparatory to occupancy by the Old Town Tavern, Floyd Coleman, proprietor, who will change his location from the Huck building at the corner of Elm street and Riverside drive, on May 1. The work of decorating St Patrick's church, which was commenced on Easter Monday, is nearing completion and promised to transform the already attractive edifice into one of surpassing beauty. The church which was built in 1922, is being decorated for the first time, its walls previously being in white. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 10, 1952) With the regular order of business disposed of at the city council meeting Monday night, -the problem of dogs came in for discussion. It is quite generally known that McHenry has been over-run with dogs this spring and complaints have been numerous. The city has an ordinance governing cogs running at large and en forcement of that ordinance has been ordered. Dogs not on a leash and found running at large, will be picked up. Lakemoor is now officially a, village. After many weeks of controversy over the legality of the election on Nov. 27, 1951, Judge Henry L. Cowlin dismissed a petition of ob jectors to the incorporation and declared the election legal. The vote last fall showed 110 favoring the proposal and 105 opposed. A report this week stated that about 2,000 county residents to date have returned their Easter seal contributions to the McHenry County Crippled Children's association. More than 20,000 letters were mailed out to residents of the county in the past three weeks. The organization secures its funds through voluntary con tributions and the annual Easter seal sale is its largest source of income. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 13, 1967) McHenry police are in vestigating five burglaries of city business establishments this past weei:, one which netted the thieves close to $3,000. The biggest loss oc curred at Shay's Music World, which was entered sometime between 9:30 Saturday night and 10 o'.clock the next mor ning. This was the second time the store had been burglarized. The City Council, continuing the study of future expansion of sanitary sewer facilities, met again Monday night with H.S. Sundin of the Baxter and Woodman engineering firm. Discussion centered around formation of a sanitary district which would spread over a wide area outside the city limits. However, much thought is centered around expanded facilities within the city designed to provide for ex pansion in phases of development The board of District 15, meeting Monday evening, approved a summer school remedial reading and math program for Grades 2 through 7. Through testing results and classroom recommendation of teachers, students achieving one or more years below their grade level placement will be referred for this program Sessions will be held covering a period of five weeks, meeting for fifty-minute sessions five days a week from 8 a.m. to noon. Coach Chuck Cuda has four returning lettermen that should pace the team to a very suc cessful season. The returning lettermen are Tom Evans the only senior. Frank Cuda, last year's conference champion, should lead the team this year. Other members on the varsity are Darrel Whynot, John Reihansperger, Mark Domoto and Dave Schmitt. A multi-colored, serape- striped table cover (in cloth or paper) makes a good base. Make your own or buy paper and straw flowers in vivid col ors to use in a basket for the centerpiece. If you're feeling extravagant and you have lots of time, make your own pinata. The book reading habit is a good one to develop if you select the right books.
