Controversial "Hostage" Is Players' Choice The highly controversial, award winning play, "The Hostage", written by Brendan Behan, will be presented by the Town Square Players, under the direction of Arthur Thor- sen. This comedy, farce, satire, tragedy and musical, all wrapped up in one, will open at the Woodstock Opera House April 29 and will run April 30, May 1, 6, 7 and 8. The plot involves an English soldier being held as hostage for an I.R.A. member due to be hung in Belfast for shooting a policeman The young hostage is being held in. of all places, a brothel. The characters are off beat and shady, to say the least, but as the momentum builds, one can see that they actually represent mankind and the frustration about the world today. "The Hostage" pokes fun at everything phony, immoral and hypocritical in the world, yet, at the sam< time has a very serious message for the theater-goer. TURN ONS YOU'RE A DIVORCEE ? American Caflcor Soctoty P.UiK i:t - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, APRIL 8, 1977 Health Profession f line Scholarships Offered Editor's Note: This is a regular feature, prepared by the American Cancer Society in cooperation with the McHenry county unit, Eustice Klein, president, to help save your life from cancer. A reader explains: "I would like to know just how effective X-ray mammography is in finding breast cancer in women under 50. ANSWERline: Out of 129,000 symptom-free worhen between 35 and 50, enrolled in breast cancer screening demon stration projects sponsored by the American Cancer Soqety and the National Cancer In stitute, 223 women were found to have breast cancer on the initial screening. Of these, 100 breast cancers were found by mammography alone. Of great importance is that fact that the great majority of these 223 breast cancers were found in an extremely early stage when the probability of cure is excellent in most cases. And this mammography involves very low doses of radiation: an average of nine-tenths of a rad exposure to the center of each breast (a rad is the standard unit of measure). A woman writes: "Several members of my family have had a colon-rectal cancer. I am concerned not only because I am afraid of developing the disease, "but because I would rather die than have a colostomy." ANSWERline: A family history doesn't mean that you will ever actually develop colon-rectal cancer or even if you do, that you will require a colostomy. A colostomy is an operation in which the diseased portion of the bowel is removed, and an opening is created in the wall of the ab domen for the elimination of natural waste. A colostomy can rightfully be considered a symbol of life rather than death from untreated cancer. Today's medical rehabilitation techniques mean that the colostomate is better able to work enjoy sports, and have sexual contact. Without minimizing the personal effort it takes to overcome the trauma of any cancer surgery, people who have had colostomies have formed self- help clubs (United Ostomy association) throughout the nation, and many are American Cancer society volunteers eager to help the new colostomate adjust in a positive way* The ACS also siippoi'tK the training of specialist*, called enterostomal therapists, who are able to teach new patients how to be comfortable and confident. Colostomy may not yet be an easily-discussed topic, but there has been tremendous change. The owner of a health food store writes: "When are they going to stop fluoridating our drinking water? T h r e e s c h o l a r s h i p s , renewable yearly, will be awarded this June to can- be exposed to cancer just to prevent a few cavities?" ANSWERline: In a report that was issued by the National Cancer institute in June, it was once again affirmed that fluoridation of drinking water does not contribute to cancer. The American Cancer society fully agrees. And, further confirmation of this well- established fact comes from the Royal College of Physicians of London as well. Cavities are hardly a paltry problem, dental caries is one of the most prevalent of human diseases! didates who wish to study nursing and other health-cafe professions.
