By L^rry Swaim Many people are predicting that the church as we know it today cannot survive. They say that denominationalism is feeding on itself and failing to speak to the real problems that are troub ling people. It is not uncommon to run into someone who says that in twenty °five more years, we'll be seeing no more of the church . . . and, indeed, we wouldn't miss ,it if it were gone now. i What do you think? I suppose the, answer is going to depend on what church is doing for you. If you are one of the many who have enthusiastically supported some church this year, you obr. viously are getting something in return that you consider to be worth your time and effort. On the other hand, you may be in tjie national majority of non- church goers., nso, you probably hold the typical position of "1 have nothing against the church . . . it is okay for people who like it . . . it just doesn't happen to be my thing." In the discussion of church survival, the sneaky old habit of- over-generalizing is quite a pro blem. I or instance, when we say "church." it 's hard to know what we're talking about. The simple church as Jesus established it was certainly a far cry from the chaos- of cults we see today. You can find some denomination which believe in almost anything. You know what I think is„ the most logical approach to the multiplicity ol denominations? 1 think the logical approach to the whole mess is to start all over. Look at it this way: Jesus set up the church exactly the way it was best for human beings. We can read about the church and its spread in the Bible book called "Acts of the Apostles." It is fantastic the way converts were attracted to the pure and simple version of God's way . . . three thousand in one day in Acts, chapter two. But, as time passed, men started adding things and arguing about the things they added and that's where all the denominations got started. In fact; ' that 's when all the appeal seemed to start going out of the church. I guess maybe I ain saying that man-made religion just never quite fits our needs like Jesus' original church did. l or a confidential and Bib lical answer to your questions', write Larry Swaim, 985 Ponce de Leon Avenue, N. UNDERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH •a health .column from the Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare Schizophrenia: Looking for Causes and Treatment Research on the causes and treatment of schizophrenia is described in a new leaflet is sued by the National Institute of Mental Health. "Treatment of Schizophrenia" is an inter view with Dr. Loren R. Mosh- er, Chief of NIMH's Center for Studies of Schizophrenia. Dr. Moshcr believes it is premature to say that schiz ophrenia is a specific disease witli a specific cause. Rather, he leans toward the idea that --like congestive heart failure --it may have a number of. different causes. What we do know, says the scientist, is that it is a dis order of the whole person and that behavior, thinking, and ! biochemistry are involved. He \ believes it is triggered by •] stress, as are other psychiatric problems. He notes that schiz- ophrenic patients arc distin guishable by thought disorder, . strange behavior, withdrawal, inability to experience pleas- ' ure, and hallucinations and • delusions. Recent studies seem to show i genetic component in schiz- >phrenia; however, the heredi tary factor is "less in magni tude" than mental health re searchers used to think. "Indeed," said Dr. Mosher, "it is likely there is a small genetic component in all func tional psychiatric illnesses." The NIMH scientist points out that therapeutic drugs have proven to be an inex pensive, effective way to re lieve schizophrenia; that they have been extremely? useful in reducing the number of schiz- ' ophrenics hospitalized; and ' that they make it possible for community-oriented treatment programs to be established. But he adds, "Cost-effective ness isn't paramount. Pills are misused if they're a substitute for warm, empathetic, sensi-^ tive interest in other human beings " The booklet. Trends in Menial Health Treatment vf Schizophrenia , is available by mail, 350 per single copy, from the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington,. D C. 20402. There is a mini- mum charge of $1.00 for each | mail order. NO PATIENCE A n g 1 e r - - Y o u ' v e b e e n watching me for three hours. Why don't you try fishing yourself?
