Quiet it may have been, but only because Robinson is a soft spoken man. Un eventful it has not been. His mild, almost humble man ner. conceals the fact that he is at heart an activist. Robinson's brand of ac tivism is not the aimless change - for - the - sake - of - change variety. "I've made a special effort to get my fellow blacks to participate in civic affairs," Robinson told a writer from The National Council on the Aging. He is a strong believer in the Constitution and con siders voting the hallmark of a good citizen. "it's very important to reduce the number of un registered voters," Robin son said. "There are some where around seven million people who don't vote, and that's not good." Robinson also works with the rural elderly, advising them on ways to supple ment their retirement in come and increase their food supplies by poultry raising and gardening. One source of income for the elderly is provided by Robinson himself. "I'm 83 and I still work in the nursery, so I know that someone 10 or 20 years younger is more than ca pable of working." Robinson is the youngest of 11 children and has lived in Virginia all of his life. "Mv father was a veteri narian," Robinson said, "When my mother was preg nant with me, he got a job in Philadelphia. Mother wanted me to be born in Virginia and after a couple of months in Philadelphia she talked my father into returning to Virginia. The family's been here ever since." Education has played an important role in Robin son's life --not just as his profession for 40 years, but as a way for a person to get ahead in life. Robinson's voice fills with pride when he talks of the accomplish ments of his two daughters. "One of my girls is a doc tor practicing in Califor nia," he said. "The other one just got her law degree and is preparing to take the Virginia Bar Exam." When he started his career in 1925, Robinson was made the principal of a very poor school. "The school was in such bad shape that it wasn't even accredited," Robin son said. "A diploma wasn't worth more than the paper it was printed on." Through his efforts, Rob inson got the school accred ited. He considers that one of the finer accomplish ments of his life. Striving for improvement has been an important facet of Robinson's 83 years and one that age hasn't dimin ished. The Robinsons have ail livedlong active lives, work ing until they died. "My mother died at 104," Robinson said. "When my father died at 92, a local wit suggested an autopsy be performed to find out what caused him to die prema turely." The triangular, two-colored emblem is required on all farm equipment that is moved on public roads. The following requirements for displaying the SMV emblem are specified by state and federal laws: -Display SMV emblems both day and night. -Mount emblems securely and centrally at the rear of the vehicle, four to twelve feet above the ground. - Put an SMV emblem at the rear of towed equipment which may obscure the emblem on the tractor. -When a tractor is towing a piece of equipment that does not obscure the emblem, the emblem may be displayed on either unit -If towing a registered truck with a farm tractor and it conceals the emblem on the tractor, the truck must display an SMV emblem. Remember to remove the emblem from the truck later before driving the truck itself on the highway. -It is unlawful to display the emblem on a post, structure, or on any vehicle designed to operate at high speeds on the highway. / - Keep emblems in good shape One can be fined for a faded, sub-standard emblem. -Red flags on farm equip ment are permissible but not required. Proper use of the SMV em blem is one of six agricultural standards under the Oc cupational Safety and Health act passed by Congress in 1970, concludes Young Spring Fever? Make The Most Of It Spring is the time when a young man's heart turns to romance. Long walks through the park are almost a neces sity, a trip to the zoo is a must and holding hands is appropriate anywhere. But hearts need more than love to keep them healthy -- they need some loving care. And the American Heart Association (A HA), along with the National Sporting Goods son intends to work in his nursery and use his under stated forcefulness to im prove conditions for others. "I don't know whether it's true, but some people in these parts say I have a certain amount of influ ence," Robinson said mod estly. "I just try to do the best I can. That's all you can ask of any man." "THERE IS A WICKED INCLINATION in most people to suppose an old man decayed in his intel lect. If a young man or middle-aged man, when leaving a company, does not recollect where he laid his hat, it is nothing; but if the same inattention is dis covered in an old man, peo ple will shrug their shoul ders and say, 'his memory is going.'"-- SAMUEL JOHNSON, 18th century English lexi cographer and critic. The People Pleasers Do It Again! 'SAVE *400 DURING AMERICAN MOTORS and MITCHELL AMC-JEEP'S... Association (NSGA), recom mends one way to give your heart that little extra TLC -- participating in sports. April is "Put Your Heart Into Sports Month." This program, which is sponsored by NSGA for AHA, is designed to encourage people of all ages to participate in sports, in volving regular and moderate exercise, for the sake of their hearts. Exercise, although it may not prevent a heart attack, might help reduce the risk. And with warm weather as close as your doorstep, what better reason is there to begin exercising your way to a healthy - and happy -- heart? Motivation is important in almost any activity you under take, so invite your friend, lover or mate to join in an ex ercise program with you. "Sports for two" is a sure fire way to keep you involved in your program -- and with the one who's number one in your heart! AHA and NSGA recom mend sports that are rhyth mic, repetitive and involve regular motion -- like jogging or bicycle riding. So next time you decide to take a walk in the park, why not make it a jog (hand in hand?) through the park? Or take a spin on your bicycle (or bicycle built for two!). However, before you begin any exercise program, check with your doctor. And for previously sedentary individ uals over 35 -- even those who are "young at heart" -- AHA also recommends exercise tol erance testing. Once you be gin your regular exercise schedule, exercising 30 min utes a day, three times a week, is usually sufficient. The weekend provides a per fect opportunity for "sports for two." A game of doubles tennis, for example, might be a great way to spend a Satur day afternoon . . . . it'll be a love match no matter what. And if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, a camping/hiking trip can be healthy for your heart, a perfect way to enjoy Housing Starts Up Actual housing starts for 1976 will total about 1.54 million units according to recent figures released by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). This is a 32% gain over 1975's 30-year low of 1.16 million units. Almost 1.2 million of these units were for single families making 1976 one of the biggest years ever for that particular group. The biggest growth areas geographically have been along the west coast and in the southwest, while the northeast is still lagging behind. Since the NAHB economist scored so highly on their 1976 projections. their 1977 estimates are definitely worth noting. Housing starts will reach 1.83 million units in 1977 with about 1.3 million being in the single family home area according to Mike Sumichrast. NAHB chief economist. Mortgage interest rates are beginning to decline slowly and are expected to be aeound 8.13% by mid-year. Since the median price for a house sold in 1976 rose from $39,000 to $44,000, any drop in interest rates will be good news for home buyers. the Great Outdoors .... and romantic. Camping out under the stars just might put "stars" in his or her eyes! AHA warns, however, that over-exercising can be as bad as or even worse than not exercising enough. So don't push yourself too hard! Set • pace for yourself and stick to it -- just because a friend can jog two miles doesn't mean you can.
