Doing It Safely The fourteen youths who participated in the Tractor Safety school have received training in how to be safer tractor operators. Being a safe operator takes the proper mental attitude toward safety, knowledge of the equipment being operated, and alertness at all times. These were the factors stressed in the ten hours of instructions sfnd in the written and driving tests that were taken. Bruce Jepsen from George P. Freund Implement Co., Les Finder, Marengo Vo- ag instructor, Bill Pictor, Woodstock Vo-ag instructor, fhil Brown, Harvard Vo-ag instructor, Vern Stade, McHenry county Youth council member assisted in the training sessions. The youths participating received certification and exemption from the federal child labor regulations which prohibit them from operating specific farm equipment on farms other than their own fathers'. Tax Assistance The Illinois Department of Revenue announced recently that toll-free telephone assistance to taxpayers will be available. Persons should call 1-800-252-8972. Taxpayers can obtain assistance on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. at any of the revenue depart ment's district offices. Stress is simply pressure from some outside source that makes us feel tense inside...and certain kinds of stress are good for us...it keeps us on our toes. Too much stress, however, can sometimes produce ten sions that are serious enough to W^hterfere with your normal daily activities. There are many causes of tension: the death of a loved fr; loss of friends when moving; separation or divorce; major illness or injury; major lifestyle changes; trouble at work; losing a job; taking a new job; budget problems; pregnancy; changes in family responsibilities; enforced leisure and reduced income that often accompany retirement. Tension from these or other causes can result in anxiety...a vague fear that something bad or unpleasant is going to happen, even if there's no real threat. Anxiety often results from holding back feelings we can't cope with or understand. Or, it may grow out of a conflict between what we'd like to do ajid what we think we ought to dq. And, prolonged anxiety can lead^tft sijrtous problems, such as ulcers, high blood pressure and an inability to enjoy life. The most commotf signs of anxiety are nervousness, trembling, dizziness, pounding heart, inability to slow down or relax, abnormal eating habits, troubled breathing. Tension can also lead to that "sad and blue" feeling known as depression. Some depression is normal. It is a natural reaction to the realization that we often fall short of our hopes. But, like anxiety, prolonged depression is a serious problem. Long-lasting feelings of worthlessness and isolation n lead to suicide. Depression...a feeling of dness or disappointment that ds to apathy and withdrawal for no specific reason...may result from frustration, the inability to live up to ex pectations or from a disap pointment or compromise. The most common signs of depression are: fatigue; sleeplessness; the inability to concentrate; restlessness; boredom; lack of interest in food, sex and life in general; and feelings of worthlessness or h o p l e s s n e s s . P r o l o n g e d depression may cause physical symptoms, such as headache or weight loss, or may lead to drug or alcohol abuse. What can you do to keep your tensions within reasonable limits? There are several simple steps you can take to help avoid a serious problem. 1. See your doctor for a physical check-up. 2. When tensions build up, discuss the problem with a close friend or with the people involved. 3. Take a break from routine, no matter how short. A change of pace; even for 15 minutes, can give you a new outlook on old problems. 4. Teach yourself to relax. Just a few minutes of peace and quiet every day can make a big difference. 5. Swim, walk, bicycle, ^jfig-'-any favorite form of exercise will, help you let off steam and work out stress. 6. Plan your work, as much as possible, to use your time and energy more evidently. 7. Don't expect too much of yours e l f . I t c a n c r e a t e t e n s i o n i f , things don't work out. Set realistic goals, and expect to be successful. 8. Whenever possible, avoid too many big changes coming at the same time. Although stress and tension can't be eliminated from our lives, we can all learn to cope with them better.
