They have an extra sense that clues them on happenings, especially to someone dear to them. And they react to the situation with sympathy or protection or whatever may be called for. An old friend noticed a strange change in her young pet -- a beautiful German Shepherd female whose name is Gretchen - in recent months. She lost her husband in November and it has been a sad and difficult time for her. She kept her grief to herself and occupied the time by trying to be as busy as possible. But Gretchen knew, that her mistress was deeply grieved and the change in her behaviour might be summed up as an overly protective at­ titude. She watches adults warily, barks at them, and many of the owner's friends are afraid to come to her home for this reason. She has had to shut the dog off in a room which did nothing to correct the situation. Gretchen is her usual happy self playing and romping with children, she welcomes family members, but other adults get the hpstile treatment. Just judging by the dog's behavior the conclusion might be that she is a mean vicious dog . But a wise and understanding Helping Paws worker analyzed the situation differently. The dog can't possibly know that the death of her owner's husband was inevitable. All Gretchen senses is that her mistress has been hurt and is grieved. And that it was an adult who was the cause of it. So she has become overly protective for her mistress when adults are around. She sees them as a threat that might bring more grief to her mistress. Now the owner plans to do more socializing with adults and take Gretchen with her so that she becomes acquainted with these relationships. Recently the owner joined in a garage sale taking place in the neighborhood and she took Gretchen with her on a leash. Gretchen behaved quietly and calmly as many adults at­ tended the sale, and was happy to be close to her mistress rather than tied up at home watching the activity. The Helping Paws worker suggested this very plan - if at all possible take Gretcfien along when she was with people. It seems to be working. A female Cocker Spaniel showed symptoms of a pregnancy. When taken to the vet he examined her and diagnosed it as a false pregnancy. He asked the owner if she was pregnant. The owner replied she was. Said the vet: "Your pet could have told you this before you knew it your­ self, and this is why the pet had the false pregnancy." Amazing? Not really. Never underestimate the intuition of a dog. The Intake Screening, Diversion and Family Coun­ seling program is intended to establish a screening procedure to divert juveniles from the court system, promote family counseling, , and to develop a program to use existing resource agencies and promote new agencies where none existed before. The commission also ap­ proved funding in the amount of $60,822, for the continuation of McHenry Youth Service bureau. The Youth Service bureau works to develop supports which will enable youths to assume responsibility and better adapt to community life. Under this program delays in the court system have been reduced because the Defender's office has used the funds for in­ creased investigation and preparation of cases so they can pass through the system more efficiently. The, Defen­ der's office has been able to add an investigator, legal research assistant, and a para- professional. The Probation Services program received second year funding in the amount of $24,791.
