Students received in­ struction on the operation, maintenance and repair of motor-opeiated gyro com­ passes used aboard Navy ships. On one hand there are Mr. Buss and Mr. Pintozzi requesting a zoning change for commercial purposes. On the other hand there are seventy- seven objectors to this change. Two people opposed by seventy-seven. "If government is to be truly democratic, obviously the majority rules. To decide otherwise seems quite ex­ traordinary under this type of government. Government must respond to people's needs and not to special interest groups. Our representatives are elected to represent us and reflect our views--and that means the majority, not just two of us. "In view of Mr. Adam's position as expressed by him in the Piaindealer, we are indeed fortunate that he resigned as he was never elected to represent commercial interests in McHenry, but to represent people. The Zoning Board of Appeals voted to keep this 12 acres single family with only one vote in favor of the multi-family and commercial development. "The apartment buildings are to be 35 feet high (the legal maximum in McHenry) and 25 feet from the adjoining property (the legal minimum). This has the effect of a 35-foot wall only 25 feet from your property line. "A conservative estimate would be 200 people from the ninety-six units crowded onto 6 acres next to single family homes. "2. The noise resulting from two window air conditioners per unit, a 200-car parking lot, and that number of people will be especially disturbing next to single family homes. "3, Lights from the many cars, the apartment parking lot, the well-lighted area for the proposed car dealership on the commercial section will be comparable to the West campus parking lot lights rather than the present Edgebrook Heights residential lighting. , "4. Property values will undoubtedly be adversly af­ fected as will the character of the neighborhood. "5. Three years ago the city put time and money into having experts draw up a master plan. This 12 acres was to remain single family homes according to that plan. Why should there be a change so soon after that plan was adopted? "6. The south end of the 12 acres in question is a semi­ permanent standing water area, as anyone who has driven south on 31 very often has probably noticed. It has no drainage at present. The developers' plans are to fill in this low area and blacktop and build on most of the 12 acres. They plan to pipe the run-off water to adjoining property rather than use storm sewers. If this is done they will flood the adjacent land to the south and east. Hie National Safety council has offered free additional information on disaster survival to all those who take the National Disaster Survival test, it was announced by Vincent L. Tofany, council president. He said all people have to do is send their completed official test form to the council, with their names and addresses indicated. "The National Disaster Survival test itself will provide people with a wealth of useful information for preventing disaster-related accidents," Tofany said. "Our follow-up printed piece, however, will provide additional details, and can be used as a reference long after the program is over." The National Disaster Survival test will be telecast at 8 p.m. Eastern and 7 p.m. Central on NBC as a 90-minute "Big Event." It is being produced for NBC by Warren V. Bush Productions in cooperation with the National Safety council. The council expects approximately 20 million people to participate in the test. "We anticipate great interest in the program because the National Disaster Survival test will be concerned with all types of safety - public, home, industrial, and even traffic - all within the context of disasters." Tofany said. "Most accidents associated with disasters can be prevented, if only people knew what to do. The test is designed to provide people with that information." Persons who have appeared on all three national networks will appear on the National Disaster Survival test. Host of the test will be Tom Snyder of NBC's Tomorrow show. Co-hosts include journalists Shana Alexander (CBS's 60 Minutes), John Amos (ABC's Roots), and Kate Jackson (ABC's Charley's Angels; and astronaut Wally Schirra. Tofany will provide amplification for the answers to be given on the program, and Frank Stanton, chairman and principal officer of the American National Red Cross and former president and then vice chairman of CBS, will also appear. The National Disaster Survival test is patterned after the award winning National Driver's test that first appeared on CBS in 1965. That program attracted more than 50 per cent of the entire viewing audience in its time period, and won the coveted Pea body award. It was produced and written by the same Warren Bush whose company is producing the National Disaster Survival test. To generate participation in the program, the National Safety council has distributed masters of the official test form throughout the council's entire membership, encouraging all members and friends to duplicate from the master. The council has also invited newspapers across the country to run the official test form.
