That's the opinion of Post­ master Leroy Smith, whose office is preparing for the seasonal bulge in mail volume. It may come as a surprise to well meaning sons and daughters that each year the Postal Service receives thousands of pieces of Mother's day mail that cannot be delivered because of in­ sufficient, incorresj, or illegible addresses. Postmaster Smith noted. And many of them cannot be returned to the sender because there's no return address But there seems to be an improving trend, he said. For example, in the chicago post office, one of the nation's largest with an average daily mail volume of about twelve million pieces, an estimated 13.000 pieces of Mother's day mail wound up in the dead letter branch in 1974. This dropped to 10.000 in 1975 and to 9.000 last year The Chicago office handles "dead" mail from Illinois and parts of Wisconsin, Indiana and Iowa. "We hope this trend will continue," Postmaster Smith said, "because undeliverable- as-addressed mail is an ex­ pensive problem to handle for the postal service. Misad­ dressed Mother's day mail represents only a small part of the 10 million pieces of mail coming into the nation's post offices every day and requiring special handling at an annual cost of some $330 million because "of improper ad­ dressing." In recent years, Mother's day greetings and gifts have been challenging Valentine cards as second in popularity to Christmas and New Year mailings, and represent about a 10 percent increase over nor­ mal mail volume. To prevent this year's Mother's day mail from being delayed or winding up in the dead letter office, Postmaster Smith offered these suggestions: . Check Mom's address before mailing. Use compass direction and road, drive, lane, etc., as applicable; put your return address on the envelope; make sure you have proper postage; and don't forget the zip code. "Call the post office at 385- 0816 if you have any questions about the right zip code", Smith said. For many years the Phantom Regiment has appeared in the Woodstock V-J Day parade and Drum and Bugle corps contest.
