The others were Aldermen Doherty, Frisby and Kreutzer. City Clerk Ray Conway, City Treasurer Gerald J. Carey and Police Magistrate, John McEvoy. The matter of lighting up the Boone Creek bridge near the city hall was taken up and the Carey Electric shop ordered to install two lights one at each end of the bridge. There being a vacancy on the Council due to the election of Alderman Frett to the office of mayor, the board decided to hold a special election in the second ward and elect another alderman. This election will be held on May 31. An interesting home building project is under way at Lily Lake where the Sampson Sex Co., of Chicago, is offering hundreds of lots for sale The development is located at the east side of Lily Lake on Route 20, which is the direct road to Chicago. The company pur chased several of the farms adjacent to the lake, including the Gerhard Wagner farm, and this land they have already subdivided into lots. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 6, 1937) Fire destroyed the Woodman hall, an old landmark at Ringwood, early this Thursday morning and threatened the town as the wind blew charred shingles and sparks for great distances. The blaze started in the front entrance to the building and was discovered about 2:15o'clock, with Clayton Harrison reported to be the first one to reach the scene of the blaze. The heavy rain of Friday night and early Saturday morning failed to dampen the courageous spirits of'Miss Maurie Taylor and her girls of the high school Athletic Association on May day, when the first girls' Play day in McHenry took place and proved to be a huge success. About fifty guests from other schools came for the day with 110 girls and their sponsors present for the cafeteria lun cheon served in the high school. On Wednesday of last week the members of the physics class at the high school, with their teacher, H.D. Ellis, went to Chicago, where they put in a long day visiting the Field Museum, Planetarium and Museum of Science and In dustry . Saturday was not cnly an outstanding occasion in the annals of girls sports, alone for history was also made in the sports circles of the boys when the district high school golf tournament took place at the McHenry Country club and the boys tennis team went to Rock- ford to compete in the district tennis meet, Harry Anderson of McHenry qualified for the state golf contest to be played at Champaign. Harry shot a 79, placed second in • tourney. Cletus Althoff ply second in the tennis meet st' d in Rock- ford and will make tne trip to the state finals. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 8, 1952) A young McHenry Marine was recognized recently for outstanding service to his country against the enemy in Korea. Marine Captain Leo Gerlach, 29, of McHenry and Santa Ana, Calif., turned in a score of twelve enemy trucks destroyed to show for one night's work. Capt. Gerlach has been awarded a Gold Star in lieu of his second Air Medal. This award was authorized by Maj Gen Christian Schilt, commanding general of the first Marine Aircraft Wing, for Capt Gerlach's first twenty flights against the enemy in Korea. Miss Jennifer Houda, con tralto, a resident of Woodlawn Park, and a junior in the local high school, was presented with a blue ribbon medal last Friday for winning first place in state competition at McMurray college, Jacksonville. Second place awards went to the school orchestra, Jack Wirts, violin and vocal solos; and the violin quartet. St. Mary's Catholic church assistant pastor since early in April is Rev. Fr. John Reuland, who replaces Fr. Eugene Baumhofer. Fr. Reuland is a native of Aurora, was ordained March 25 of this year at St. Nicholas church in that city and read his first Mass March 30. Tragedy struck the Zobjeck family, including the mother, father and two children, early Monday morning when con tents of their small home at Lakemoor were completely destroyed by flames and the interior of the building badly burned. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 11. 1967) Seven persons were named to the new Mental Health board for' McHenry county at Tuesday's monthly meeting of the county supervisors, in spite of the objection of Supervisor Edward Buss of McHenry that the interests of retarded children were not * well represented. The vote was 20 to 7 in favor of the appointments. Dr. Wilt of McHenry representing the Medical Society was named from this area. On Sunday, May 14, the Chain O'Lakes Covenant church will dedicate the church that was made from a barn. Six months /ago the congregation began a remodeling projebt on the Peter Freund barn located at 4815 N. Wilmot ' road. Arrangements have JIOW been completed for the dedication of this church. Probably the happiest young pupils at last Saturday evening's annual M.C.H.S. junior prom, were the newly crowned king and queen. The king is Robert Mauch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Mauch and the queen is Lois Hansen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R E. Hansen of Wonder Lake. The election to name members to the board of the Junior college district of McHenry and Boone counties will be held Saturday, May 27. Two residents of the McHenry area are among those who have filed, Naomi Meyer and Charles (Chuck) Peterson, both representing the unin corporated areas.
