SUPPLEMENT TO McHENRY PLAINDEALER- PAGE 8- WEDNESDAY, MAY 4. 1977 Passport applications Use instant color pics The word "Passport" con jures up visions of the ad venture of travel to faraway places . . . and passport pic tures. An estimated three mil lion Americans will be is sued passports in 1977. In the spring rush season, processing those passports could take between two and three weeks, but the traveler in a hurry can get a passport within 48 hours if urgent handling is requested for good reason. Sleek as jetliner The new 1977 passports are as sleek and streamlined as the jetliner the modern traveler takes for granted. Smaller in size than they have ever been, the new passports are V/i x 5 inches Jn size, just right to slip into a jacket pocket or small handbag. They have also been sim plified in many ways. The bearer no longer is identified by height and color of hair and eyes since these are no longer considered significant identifying features. But photos are still a must. Photos were hassle Filling out a passport ap plication is easy, but getting the photos in a hurry used to be a hassle until the U.S. Passport Office approved Polaroid instant color pic tures. Polaroid's Miniportrait pictures instantly provide the traveler with the required two photographs in brilliant color -- a welcome change from the old black and white photos. There is no waiting in volved or need to return at a later date to pick up the all- important pictures, a great benefit to the traveler in a hurry. * Ready in minutes In minutes the photos are ready to be trimmed to the specified size and affixed to the passport. Passports did not always carry portraits of the bearer because the use of passports long antedates photography. For many years before pass port photos came into gen eral use a written description of the bearer was inscribed on an official sheet of paper. The earliest recorded pass port mention is found in the Bible in the Old Testament, Nehemiah, Chapter 2 verse 7. "Moreover I said unto the king if it please the king let letters be given to the gov ernors Beyond the River that they may convey me over until I come into Judah. .. From the French Many centuries later the French words "passer" and "porte" were combined into one word to mean an offi cial document issued by a government that would per mit ships to enter and leave its ports. In America, the Division of Foreign Affairs of the Continental Congress issued passports to colonial travel ers even before the Consti tution of the United States was ratified. Safety experts at Gillette recommend drawing up and practicing a fire escape plan in your home, pinpointing escape exits like widows and doors that can be used in an emergency. Keeping a rope ladder in second-floor bed rooms, installing a reliable smoke detector like Gillette's Captain Kelly Smoke Detector, and learning to feel a closed door for heat before opening are all safety tips that can be literal life-savers in the event of a home fire. 1 £ \bur Mother laves you.
