However, in spite of the ever present automo­ bile, we are fast becoming a nation on our feet. Perhaps this turnabout is due to the urging of the President's Council on Phys­ ical Fitness or perhaps we are beginning to rediscover the joys of physical activity. Whatever the reasons, it is apparent that running for training purposes, or for just plain fun is on the upswing. Running is an integral part of the training program for almost all sports since it helps to build stamina. But along with the bene­ fits derived from running there are also problems. Generally they are due to either over use, faulty toot and leg structure or both. Too much too soon At a recent podiatric sports medicine seminar in New York, Drs. Steven Su- botnick, Justin Wernick, Harold Schoenhaus and Sheldon Langer, all Doctors of Podiatric Medicine, Fel­ lows of the American Col­ lege of Foot Orthopedists and members of the Ameri­ can Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, discussed the problems arising from overuse -- that is the strains, aches and pains which occur when the athletic participant does too much too soon. This can occur in the casual participant as well as in the serious athlete. Dr. Subotnick, who is an associate professor of Bio­ mechanics and Surgery at the California College of Podiatric Medicine, stated that "our foot and leg anat­ omy is generally not well suited for the surfaces on which we run and train. As a consequence, the feet and legs cannot function as well as they should. Biodynamics "When the severe stresses of athletic activity are heap­ ed upon these less-than- perfect feet and legs, injury occurs. These injuries can range from mild muscle strains to tendonitis, heel spurs and stress fractures of bone." These impressions are taken by a podiatrist or other medical specialist trained in podiatric sports medicine techniques. Spor­ thotics fit into most athletic shoes and are transferable from shoe to shoe. Dr. Schoenhaus, who is the chairman of the Depart­ ment of Biomechanics at the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine pointed out that "Sporthotics could be tailored to meet the varying requirements of both the athlete and the sport activity and in testing were shown to be of significant value in improving speed and performance as well as in reducing the incident of overuse injuries." Dr. Langer, director of the Langer All Sports Re­ search Laboratory in Deer Park, N.Y., stated that by properly realigning the feet and legs with Sporthotics much of the wear and tear which occurs in the feet, legs, knees, hip and spine during athletic activities such as basketball, football, tennis and skiing is elimi­ nated. For amateurs too! "That is why we produce Sporthotics for so many prominent professional, col­ lege and world class ath­ letes." Everyone is not a star athlete, nor do you have to be. Good health and a good frame of mind depends largely on keeping active. What better way to keep active than by jogging a little every day. But first visit a sports oriented podia­ trist to make sure that there are no undetected foot or leg problems. If there are, the doctor will prescribe for you. Now is the time to be good to yourself.
