Illinois chapter, is doing everything possible to inform the public about the nearly 100 forms of arthritis, and what we are doing to combat them." reports Peter Wolkonsky, M.D., president of the local health agency and director. Medical and En vironmental Health Services of Standard Oil Company (In diana). The foundation is expanding its public education programs this month in the hope that many Chicago metropolitan area residents will write for the many free booklets available. As this literature discloses, arthritis afflicts over twenty million men, women and children in America including more than half a million in Metro Chicago. While few can be cured, all can be effectively treated. "Too many people think that ar thritis is hopeless, but it's not true." said Dr. Wolkonsky. "Physicians now can do a great deal to prevent pain and crippling but they can't da it alone. An informed, cooperative patient is essen tial." Patients usually interpret cooperation to mean taking their medication on schedule. For the arthritis patient, it means far more. It is essential to maintain a balance between resting seriously inflamed joints and doing special exercises to help continue or restore mobility. Too much exercise, or the wrong kind, can aggravate rather than help an arthritis condition, and too much rest can increase joint stiffness and pain. Dr. Wolkonsky noted thsit a special booklet which tells about maintaining this balance is called "Home Care Programs in Arthritis". It is available free to patients and physicians, from the Illinois Chapter of The Arthritis Foundation, 79 W. Monroe St., Suite 1105, Chicago, 60603. While writing, find out more about the agency by asking for another free leaflet - "The Arthritis Foundation - What it is, What it does". When preparing hanging planters, fix one for a friend who works in an office. It will brighten many a day for her. Colorful printed borders on the botton of skirts ̂ are very evident this season. This creates a problem for the short woman who buys clothes from the rack. But a clever seam stress has no problem if she finds attractive fabrics. Combs are useful for the short strands of hair if one is letting the hair grow long.
