During World War II Heyward served with the U.S. Army as an electronics in­ structor at Bell Laboratories from 1943 to 1946. He's a member and past master of Lodge No. 154 AF&AM and secretary of the Woodstock Flying club. He is a former president and present publicity chairman of Sinnissippi council, Telephone Pioneers of America and environmental chairman of the organization's Theodore N. Vail State chapter.
