McHENRY RESERVATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED 385-3120 3854600 elected head of the city of McHenry. submitted his ap pointments to the board Monday evening, with but two changes in the list of officials from the appointments of two years ago. Attorney Vernon J. Knox is now the new city at torney, replacing County Judge Henry L. Cowlin, who has acted in that capacity for several years. D.I. Granger was ap pointed assistant fire marshal to take the place of James Perkins, who no longer resides within the city limits. Twenty-six members and guests sat down to a dinner at the Karls' Cafe, Tuesday evening. May 4, being the date for the regular meeting of the McHenry Lions club. President C.H. Duker presided at the meeting. Although they succeeded remarkably well in keeping their secret, news of the marriage of Miss Agnes M. Guerin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Guerin of Liber- tyville and Mr. Edward Thennes, son of John Thennes of McHenry, began to leak out a few months ago until it became an accepted fact. The marriage, which took place a year ago on April 18, 1936, was celebrated at Stockton, Ql., where a nuptial high Mass was read by Father J .W. Roherman at Holy Cross church in that city. A special election for the purpose of electing a member of the board of education for the public grade school, District 15, will be held Saturday, May 29, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Matt Steffes. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 8, 1952) When the blood bank came to McHenry on April 30. 317 pints of blood were taken to be sent to Korea for use by wounded servicemen that they may be restored to health. In all, 510 had registered and there were fifty-four rejections. A total of 139 who signed pledge cards failed to appear to donate blood, a number of these for reasons over which they had no control. The Fox river at McHenry claimed another victim last Sunday evening when Carl C. Joyce, 52. of Chicago, lost his life while attempting to swim from bank to bank just south of the new bridge. Each year the Kiwanis club of McHenry township presents a merit award certificate to the outstanding eighth grade boy and girl in each grade school in McHenry township. Everything happened at Algonquin last Sunday af ternoon as the Johnsburg Tigers pounded away to a 10-8 victory over the Simplex Ironer nine. The McHenry Merchants travelled to Spring Grove last Sunday and lost a ball game by a 7 to 2 score in a county league contest. The Shamrocks met Crystal Lake on the same day and came through with a 6-2 victory after quite a tussle in the early innings. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 11, 1967) Flames raged through three of the four large buildings comprising the McHenry Lumber Co., a part of the Spring Grove Lumber Co., Inc , at 4030 Main street, about 9 o'clock Sunday evening, lighting the sky for many miles surrounding the city. When the fire had been brought under control, the damage was estimated to run about $200,000. An investigation indicated the blaze probably started after the saw mill structure was hit by lightning. Just previous to the outbreak of flames, the brief electrical storm reached its height, giving rise to this conclusion of the fire depart ment. A report of Assistant State's Atty. Thomas A.' Henley, Jr., disclosed that during February, March and April of this year, suits totalling $15,553.73 were filed by his office for the collection of delinquent personal property taxes. During this same period, judgments were entered in the total amount of $15,713.44 on suits previously filed. Odilon "Shorty" Long, 65, a former McHenry resident and father of Mrs. Richard Loser, arrived May 3 in Gabon, West Africa, to begin serving two years as a Peace Corps volunteer. He retired just a month previous from the Illinois Bell Telephone com pany. Sue Conway of McHenry and Bill Pokomey of Algonquin were crowned queen and king of the Marian Central high school Junior prom held last Friday evening at Lake Lawn lodge, Delavan. C.'w COUNCIL ACTION m* "Dear Editor: » "As an interested cittfefc, I attended the May 2 City CtagjQci] meeting and. once again, the wishes of the peop|6"~by right of petition completely ignored by the majority of our elected city officials "A petition was signed by more than seventy^flve residents in the immediate area of the proposed Route 31 zoning change They requested that the property in question „ not be rezoned for multi-family and commercial use. "While I realize it isn't always possible to respect the wishes of the objectors to a zoning change unless it is in the best interests of the entire city, this doesn't seem to be the case in this issue The testimony of all of the objectors was sub stantiated by the facts presented by various experts at the Zoning board hearing These proceedings were recorded on tape and were available for all of the alder men to hear, yet when the Mayor asked if they had listened to the tapes, none of them had. Since the purported reason for the postponement of the vote on the zoning change at the April 4 City Council meeting was to enable the alderman to study the facts, why didn't they take advantage of the availability of these tapes? It would have prevented dragging this issue on for two hours at this Council meeting "Alderman Marker asked if it would be possible to vote on the two issues separately and was told by Attorney Narusis that it was. Alderman Nolan stated that in her opinion it was unethical to split the original zoning request into two votes. She then made a motion to deny the entire zoning package as presented. The motion died for lack of a second. I wonder wHy Alderman Bolger didn't second the motion since he later voted to deny on both issues? "The issues were then separated with the multi- family dwelling being denied < by a vote of 9-0 and the car dealership being granted by a vote of 6-3 (Bolger, Nolan and the mayor voting No). When \ the mayor said he may veto the decision, one of the aldermen, commented that the mayor would be wasting his time as the veto would be overrideen by the Council. "What is the reason for ap pointing non-paid, dedicated people to a Zoning board if the Council chooses to ignore the recommendations of that Zoning board? "I feel everyone should at tend a City Council meeting at least once. Find out how your city government operate*/ It may help you decide who to support in the election in two years. "This was not the first meeting I have attended and I'm sure it won't be the last, but it certainly was the most disappointing.
