Gilead House W11.MOT. WISCONSIN A fellow came up and spoke to me in Bolger's the other day. 1 wouldn't have known him from Adam. He was none other than "Dutch" Leonard, former athlete at St. Mary's high in Woodstock. Of course, that dates back a number of years. The Leonard boys were not big, but plenty rough and tough. In fact the entire St. Mary's football team proved the old saying that it isn't the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog. When I recalled the scrap- piness of those "Irish" teams, "Dutch" replied, "Stuessy made us that way". St. Mary's didn't have any extra money so Mel Stuessy stepped in as a good Samaritan to coach the undermanned group of boys. . Maybe "Stuess' thought it was a temporary job in 1925,, but it lasted through 1954. Those little teams gave some much larger opponents the surprises of their young lives. Time marches on, but memories linger. As he hid behind rose colored, Garbo glasses, Jake Stoffel fooled us until he spoke. Jake was sitting on a bench in front of the Mc Henry Medical Group building soaking up some sunshine and watching all the girls go by. It always gives me a lift to meet and greet an old friend. Jake is a McHenry native. Then we met Mrs. Agnes Wiss&l, another McHenry old Timer. Her smile came shining through. Guess you have to get out on the street to meet people. Our one time mail carrier "The Rebel" came along and told us he is now a McHenry resident after some years away. That we didn't know. Chuck Hiller must be happy the way the Kansas City Royals are playing the game of baseball. Those Royals have a defense that must make their pitchers happy. They can go get em If the Royals aren't champs again this year, somebody is going to play a helluva lot of baseball to beat them We are in your Corner, Chuck, except when you play the White Sox. A long time friend, Emma King, left this earth suddenly last Saturday. A good, christian woman was Emma. She shouldn't have any detours or delays in going through the gates to heaven. Wonder how many brands of soap there are on the market Must have heard 25 ads telling that each of those 25 are the best. Was a time when American Family soap took care of most needs. You washed your face with Ivory. Fels Naptha was for greasy overalls. How did housewives get by? LOST VALLEY -- FOUND -- Saturday night, April 30 ended the first month of a new era of big band music in Northern Illinois. With the final strains of "Mood Indigo and hundreds of other great works filtering through the rooms at Lost Valley and with the Hun dreds of guests and staff members leaving the premises, the writer was reminded that great music and great musicians seem to last forever. With the superb performances behind us of Woody Her man, Buddy Rich, Stan Kenton, and the Duke Ellington Orchestra, a truly new era of American music appreciation is beginning to descend upon us. While sitting in the audience and watching many of the performan ces, the writer was tremendously impressed with the age group variances. People in their 20's were enjoying the same music as people in their 60s. Surely, music must be the one international language, and the performances recently heard at lost Valley were understood by all and enjoyed by everyone. With the truly great Bob Benson & His Orchestra, which is a 15 piece show-dance band coming in May 6, Lost Valley is certainly living up to it's name, "America's Jazz Capital." In addition to the Dixie, Ragtime, Swing, and Contemporary music being played at Lost Valley, every orchestra now and in the future is doing more and more dance sets because the interest in dancing of all types seems to be on the rise. Further, with the great names of American music soon to be announced at Lost Valley and with its continuing programs of music devoted to all people, I am reminded of a quotation from perhaps America s greatest performer of this cen tury, "You ain't seen nothin yet." (STAFF PHOTO- WAYNE GAYLORD) EARL WALSH I Hear SPORTS EDITOR On The Sidelines Kaneland as expected won the McHenry Relays last Friday night. The Knights, long a power in track and field, have a good chance to win the Class A state meet later this month. They have the state's best in six of the eighteen events, and if their boys continue to perform like they did here last Friday night Coach Bruce Peterson can add another trophy to his already bulging trophy case at Kaneland. In talking with "Pete" last Friday night he commented about the McHenry Relays. "I like to come to McHenry, their relays are always a lot of fun". Of course, Pete has won 7 of the 12 held here at McHenry. He went on to add, "this type of meet with four entries in each event, gives a lot of boys the chance to compete, something that we don't run into very often in our track schedule". The veteran, genial coach is of course right. McHenry is one of the few relays that gives a lot of boys the opportunity to compete. It has become so popular, that school officials are adding four more teams next year making it a sixteen team affair. Oh, for an all weather track, would we see some outstanding performances by the individuals competing. The Warriors take to the field tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. in the third game of the McHenry District. They play the winner of the Hebron-Woodstock game that was played yesterday. In the first game on Saturday morning at 10:30 a m Richmond will square off against Marian Central. The winners will play at 4 p.m. on Monday. Admission is free, so why don't you attend some of the tournament games. Gary Gray has his tennis team preparing for the Conference and District meets later in the month. The netters are doing a bang-up job, and although the competition will be tough, the Warriors will be in there giving their best effort. A tip of the fedora to John Bolton and George Eggert, pro and owner at Chapel Hill for the splendid outing held last Sunday. It was a well organized Best Ball, the buffet was excellent, and 100 golfers had a most enjoyable day. Wayne Gaylord was on hand taking a lot of photographs, some that cannot be printed. Laura Schmitt led a delegation of golf widows off the first tee at 1 p.m. El Partenheimer had to count all his strokes, therefore he didn't win any prizes. Trent Richards, track coach at St. Charles high school, has informed me that he and former Notre Dame greati Rick Wohlhuter, are conducting a Running Camp this summer. Two sessions will be held. June 19 to 24, and June 26 to 31 If anyone is interested they may write, Fox Valley Running Camp, Box 194, Elburn, 111. 60119. They have quite a schedule lined up for these two sessions. Just wonder if Zeke Bacon's golf game improved throughout this past winter. It has been a long time since I heard from my old friend. Hope he is enjoying the nice weather at the present, and will be looking forward to hearing from him. Would like to compliment my sophomore baseball team on the game they played Tuesday in losing to Crystal Lake. The undefeated Tigers came from behind to win in the bottom of the seventh. It was a tough loss to take but they acted like gentlemen. You parents should be very proud of your sons, just as I am for the way they conducted themselves after a heartbreaking defeat. Even though it is tough to lose, it is conduct like this that makes coaching rewarding. AVAILABLE Vz DAY - FULL DAY - EVENINGS RATES '/? It was the Survey Shows West Campus Students Favor Physical Education Coed Classes In early April, the students at West campus took a survey on coed Physical Education. In general. 61 percent of all boys and 71 percent of all girls are in favor of coed classes The survey results are as follows: A lengthy questionnaire covered all phases of the question. While the percentage is not overwhelmingly in favor in every case, it clearly shows the girls strongly in favor of coed classes. WITH A LEAP OF 4'6", Rocky Reick placed third for the track girls in the high jump competition Tuesday.
