PACE 10-PLAIf^pEAlER--WEDNESDAY MAY 11 1977 CANCER AnswerJine American Cancer Society y Editor's Note: This is a regular feature, prepared by the American Cancer Society in cooperation with the McHenry County Unit, Eustice Klein, president, to help save your life from cancer. A mathematics teacher writes: "Earlier this year there were rather alarming reports about a sudden jump in the cancer death rate. Wnai were the results?" ANSWERline: The cancer mortality figures for 1975 have now been reported by the National Center for Health Statistics in Washington. D C. It was unfortunate that in complete jmd sometimes in correct information was reported because the final results show that the 1975 age- adjustedcancer death rate was only seven tenths of a percent higher than in 1974. Whereas the center found that the age- adjusted cancer death rate was 131.8 per 100,000 people in 1974, it was 132.7 in 1975. An age- adjusted figure is arrived at by computing death rates based on population groups which have different age distribution patterns This technique is especially useful in compiling cancer statistics because cancer incidence increases as people age. Question: Has the govern ment banned chloroform in some consumer products because it causes cancer?" ANSWERline: Although chloroform has not been shown to cause cancer in human beings, laboratory tests per formed by the National Cancer Institute have shown that chloroform_causes kidney tumors in rats and liver cancer in mice. Accordingly, in July of this year, as a precautionary measure, the Federal Food Drug administration banned the further use of chloroform in drugs, cosmetics, and items such as toothpaste. The FDA did not recall such items already on market shelves which contain chloroform, and some consumer groups, such as the Health Research group in Washington. D C. want these items to be banned as well. FDA spokesman have said that they were not placed under the ban because it was felt that the chloroform in these products presented "no significant health hazard." Chloroform has been proven only to be a cancer hazard in laboratory animals not human beings. A middle-aged cigarette smoker asks: "Which is better: to quit cigarettes cold or to taper off using them? I want to give up this habit. ANSWERline: Both methods work, and the "right way" really depends on the in dividual-you. According to Dr. Donald T. Fredrickson, associate professor of Public Health at the New York University Medical school, and an authority on the human mechanisms involved in smoking withdrawal, statistics show that of successful quit ters, half stopped abruptly and the other half stopped gradually. Your local American Cancer society unit has a booklet entitled, "If You Want to Give Up Cigarettes," that might help you decide which method is most suitable to your personality. The booklet is available free of charge. • • • • It's practically impos sible to understand what a politician thinks by analyzing what he says. Arthritis literally means "inflammation of a joint". It is a catch-all word that covers nearly 100 different diseases that cause pain, swelling and redness in joints and con nective tissue throughout the body. What Causes Arthritis? The cause of most arthritis is unknown. Many scientists believe it gets started by a viral infection to which the body's defense mechanism fails to respond normally. Once started, arthritis feeds upon itself, much like cancer. How Many People Have Ar thritis? Some 20,000,000 Americans have arthritis so badly that they need medical attention. That includes more than half a million persons in the metropolitan Chicago area. One in ten Americans suffers from the disease, and each year 600,000 more become victims. Arthritis is the most widespread chronic disease and the No. 1 crippling disease in the United States. Who Gets Arthritis? Anyone can get arthritis since it claims victims in all age groups. Most victims of rheumatoid arthritis are people who were first afflicted with the disease between the ages of 20 and 45 Arthritis also .attacks infants and children. There are at least 250,000 children in the U.S. who have juvenile rheumatoid ar thritis; 7,800 in this Metropolitan area. The disease takes an especially heavy toll among women. Nearly 14 million arthritis victims are female - twice the number of male sufferers. What Are The Major Forms Of Arthritis? Rhematoid Arthritis (RA), the most disabling type that can cause permanent joint damage, is an inflammatory disease that afflicts five million people in the U.S. Osteoarthritis, the wear-and- tear that comes with age, af flicts 12 million Americans and can cause pain and severe limitation in normal activity. Gout (Gouty Arthritis), usually the result of an inherited defect in body chemistry, most often attacks small joints, especially the big toe. Lupus Arthritis (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus or SLE, similar to RA, is a chronic disease that inflames and damages connective tissue throughout the body. Is Arthritis Fatal? It can be. Since it affects the connective tissue that provides the body's supportive struc ture, some forms of arthritis can seriously damage such organs as the kidneys, heart and lungs. The latest figures from the U.S. Bureau of Vital Statistics list nearly 5,000 deaths per year directly at tributed to arthritis. Can Arthritis Be Treated? Cured? There is no cure for arthritis yet. But rheumatologists can prevent severe crippling in most cases. The key lies in a combination of early diagnosis and treatment tailored to the needs of each individual. Treatment may include drugs, physical therapy, rest, joint splinting and sometimes, surgery. Despite this effective treatment, arthritis sufferers spend $485,000,000 every year on quack "cures" and remedies. The Arthritis f o u n d a t i o n , t h r o u g h cooperation with government and other agencies, continues to wage an intensive campaign to expose misleading claims and educate the vulnerable consumer. Illinois Coal The impact of increased use of Illinois^ coal is being con sidered by the Illinois En vironmental Protection agency (EPA). Patrick Lynch, manager of EPA's air pollution control division said, "We are committed to continual progress in achieving air quality standards; however, we maintain that this progress should be realized without placing undue restrictions on the use of Illinois coal." Copies of a coal guide are available by writing the EPA office at 2200 Churchill road, Springfield, 62706. spurgeons Selected Spring and Summer Fabrics I Until They re Gone! All kinds!
