SECTION 2-PAGE 8 PIAINDEAIER -WEDNESDAY, MAY I) W7 H1CIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPe< Twice Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 12, 1927) McHenry and vicinity was whipped by a terrific wind and rainstorm late Monday af ternoon that killed many head of valuable livestock, paralyzed public utility service and left thousands of dollars in property damage in its wake. The storm broke a little before 1 o'clock, as the climax of a day of unsettled weather The smoke gray cloud which swept up from the southwest left a jagged line of ruins covering a narrow path which could easily be followed across country from the southwest through McHenry county to the east through Lake county. The country surrounding McHenry seemed to suffer more damage than did the city itself. The farms south and east of town seemed to be the hardest hit by the gale, there being scarcely one that did" not have some damage done by the storm. Citizens of McHenry will be offered an opportunity next week to subscribe for the Boy Scouts for 1927. A drive is to be inaugurated throughout the county for funds to promote this great work. Floyd E. Covalt has been appointed as the special representative in charge of McHenry and vicinity. The public is invited to enjoy a real treat on Monday, May 19, when the spring musical program will be given by the high school pupils at the auditorium. As stated before, through the efforts of the American Legion, the high school band is to be presented with a complete set of uniforms. They constitute a cape and cap of blue serge, with lining of orange satin. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 13, 1937) A petition signed by citizens of McHenry, asking for the re routing of Route U.S. 12 through McHenry, was presented to the board of supervisors at their meeting at Woodstock Tuesday. The petiiton asked that the board request the state highway department to make a new survey of the highway, making a short cut through the city, a distance of three fourths of a mile. Heavy traffic and the fact that the present highway passes directly in front of St. Mary's parochial school is given as the cause of the request The board voted to present the matter to the state highway department upon motion by Supervisor S.H. Freund The Kramer Boat company has opened a salesroom in the Huck building on Elm street, where the Gar Wood Century boats and Thompson outboard motors and canoes are on display. While repairs will be done at the factory, various accessories will be carried here. The place, which was formerly Smith's garage, has been remodeled and a large show window put in and an experienced salesman will soon be employed. Twenty-four little children of St. Mary's school received their First Communion during the 8:30 Mass last Sunday, May 9. After many weeks of preparation the little ones eagerly awaited and joyfully welcomed the dawn of the happiest day of their childhood. Miss Ethel Jones and Mrs. C.W. Goodell of McHenry, with other members of the McHenry County Business and Professional Women's club, will attend the sixteenth annual convention of the Illinois Federation, which is being held in the Palmer House in Chicago. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 15, 1952) A crowd of several hundred music lovers are expected to attend the second annual music festival which high school music groups will unite in presenting this week in the school gymnasium. Featured soloist will be Miss June Browne, one of the outstanding coloratura sopranos in the Chicago area and a popular soloist with The Northerners. Miss Browne will be ac companied by Glenn Welty of McHenry at the piano. Mr. Welty is musical director of The Northerners. Boy Scout Troop No. 162 of McHenry is planning for a Court of Honor tonight at the American Legion home. The program will open with the showing of a short film on Scouting, after which there will be skits by the various patrols. The Fox river claimed its second victim in less than two weeks on Wednesday evening when Shober Hairston, 73, of Chicago drowned near the dam. The elderly man was fishing when he slipped from a large rock on which he was standing and fell into the water. The hitting and pitching of Co* nie Miller played a large part in Richmond's defeat of the Shamrocks last Sunday at Richmond. Connie pitched the first four innings before ne nad to quit on account of a sore arm. Until that time he had allowed only 2 hits, an infield hit by Paul Judson in the first inning and a line drive single to left by Harry Stilling. The final score was 6-1.
