Dietician What do you do when your busy life is suddenly shattered by a paralyzing stroke? Dorothy Gatta merely read justed her schedule to include one more kind of service to others. Mrs Gatta is a dietician in Oceanside. New York. She was school lunch director at the Carle Place public school, spending weekends at Mercy hospital as relief dietician. She was also taking school courses four nights a week when a cardio vascular attack com pletely paralyzed her left side. It was fifty-two days before she regained her speech, a little more than two months before she was home. Three months of recuperation followed, but by the next school term, she was back at work with an ankle-to- hip leg brace and quad cane. Six years after her stroke, Dorothy Gatta still has not recovered the use of her left arm. but she has found a way to put even this to good use for others As vice-chairperson of the Stroke council of the Nassau Heart association, she gives demonstrations of the kind of cooking that can be done with one arm. At a meeting recently. fifty stroke veterans" learned to fry bacon, scramble eggs, section grapefruit, core apples and make beef stew. They also absorbed some of her "get-up- and-gn" philosophy. She assured them that she would visit anyone the next day to help them get started. God gives each of us different difficulties to overcome, but we can all be sure of one thing: a determination to use whatever happens in our lives for the benefit of others is a sure way to happiness ARE YOU -- MOVING? Plan To Inspect Gas Meters For Corrosion Anyone who is a -customer of Northern Illinois Gas (NI-Gas) - residential, commercial or industrial - is about to have his meter inspected. In a program scheduled to begin soon, the utility plans to train about 150 college students to visually check each of its 1.3 million gas meter sets for signs of atmospheric corrosion. NI- Gas hopes to obtain in formation on the condition of all above-ground piping and related equipment in its 17,000 square mile territory. The students will work in dependently of company meter readers, and will be distinguished by a picture identification badge and white plastic "bump" cap, each bearing NI-Gas' orange symbol. It will be necessary for the students to enter buildings where meters are located in side. even though visible through a glass block, internal piping can spected also Studentl report findings to supervisors daily, and problem areas exist, qi company personnel will to correct the condition Both female and students will be utilized program, which will be i through Sept. 1. ori students return to class! BANKING IS EVERYBODY'S BUSINESS ®/ For '77 Homebuyers -A Few Timely Tips By Willis W. Alexander Executive Vice President A merican Bankers Association Spring is bringing good news for house hunters. Builders are starting more new homes than we've seen for some time. And there's plenty of mortgage money available. In addition, interest rates on conventional mortgages continue their slight decline, now averaging 8.98% for new homes; 9% for existing ones. And finally, as in previous years, homes continue to be a good investment -- rising in value at a pace comfortably ahead of the rate of inflation. If you decide to take ad vantage of these facts to do some spring shopping, here's a tip worth considering before you begin: the well-known rule of thumb that you can generally afford a home two and a half times your income may no longer be accurate. With today's taxes, interest and mortgage costs; as well as increased deductions for social security, federal and local income taxes; and in creased food and transpor tation costs, it might add up to a monthly payment that consumes too much of your salary. Your best bet is to check with your local banker for help in calculating the month ly payments for homes whose prices are roughly twice your annual .income. Once you know what you can afford, how do you select a home? The most important consideration is location. Here are some things to ask yourself. • Schools: Are they con venient? Is there transporta tion? Do they have a good reputation? • Public Facilities: Are parks, playgrounds and swim ming pools nearby? Is there a fee to use them? • Taxes: What are the current rates for property, school, sewer and other taxes? Are they likely to go up? SECTION 2-PAGE 3-PLAINDEALER--FRIDAY, MAY 13, 1977 • Zoning: Is the surround ing area restricted to residen tial zoning? Are there plans to develop industry, roads or other facilities? <- • Transportation: How long will it take to travel to work or shop? Is public transportation convenient? • Property values: How much have homep in the area sold for in recent months? Are values going up or down? • Overall: Is the area at- CUSHIONY COMFORT AT SUPER SAVINGS! UNDERSTANDING ALCOHOLISM a health column from the Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare What Treatment For Alcoholism? What treatment is recom mended for alcoholic persons? This question is often asked of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol ism. Since each case of alco holism is different, treatment varies. But in all cases, chances for recovery are bet ter if treatment is started early. Treatment generally covers three elements: • Controlling the physical reactions produced when a person stops drinking--ex treme nervousness, anxiety, sweating, nausea, trembling or the "shakes " and, in advanced stages, delirium tremens • Correcting health prob lems which might have been caused by alcoholism, such as malnutrition and other ail ments • Helping the person, to change behavior patterns so that destructive drinking stops To obtain long-lasting re sults, some form of counsel ing, psychotherapy, or group therapv is generally recom mended. Treatment is considered successful when the person stops drinking or decreases the amount of alcohol he or she takes and begins to find more rewarding ways of liv ing. In most cases the person is able to reestablish a normal family life. He or she can once again begin to function adequately on the job and gradually re gain the respect of friends and acceptance in the com munity. Even if the individual suffers a relapse, this does not mean that treatment has been a failure. In many cases hospitaliza tion is not necessary. The al coholic person can often re ceive treatment in an outpa tient clinic, a doctor's office, or a treatment center. While receiving treatment, the per son can go about his or her usual activities at home and on the job. In very severe cases of alco holism, the patient should re main for some time in a hos pital or similar institution where the mind, as well as the body, can gradually rid itself of the effects of alcohol with out endangering the person's life. If you would like to learn more about alcoholism and how it can be treated, write to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol ism (NIAAA). Box 2345, Rockville, Maryland 20852.
