Boarding Your Pet By Enka Frey Summer vacation time will be here very soon and many pet owners will be planning to go places where it is not feasible to take a pet. Many times friends or neighbors are not able to care for one more pet, even for a short time. In that case, the choice may be either not going, or finding a good boarding kennel. There are some excellent boarding kennels in our area. Before you decide which one to choose, perhaps the following suggestions may be helpful. Call the kennel owner and make an appointment for a visit. Ask to see the kennel where your pet will be kept, and also see the runs where it will be exercised. Inquire if veterinary care will be available, if needed. Notify the kennel owner if the pet has any known medical problems. It the pet is on a special diet or has a preference for a special dog or cat food, be sure to bring enough along for the pet's stay at the kennel. If the kennel manager says that they cannot accept your pet's food, it might be advisable to seek a kennel that will. Notify kennel management where you or a friend can be reached if an emergency in volving the pet arises. Also, make it clear who will be paying for or picking up the pet tags, do not leave the pet there. Dogs For Adoption Collie Lab mix, female, eight weeks, black and tan, will be large. Keepin' Healthy by Mary Richards Remember last winter, when the snow was several feet deep...the temperatures were below zero, and the wind-chill factors were many degrees lower than that? Remember when we were all yearning for warm weather and sunshine? Well, the warm weather is with us now, and many of us are enjoying the outdoors. Summer brings us all a welcome change in routine.' Summer also brings its own special health hazards, and one of these is the increased possibility of food poisoning, especially when eating out doors. The organisms which cause food poisoning thrive in food which is warmed by the summer's heat. The basic rule for keeping food safe...whether at home or away...is "keep hot foods hot and keep cold foods cold." In other words, do not let poten tially hazardous foods reach that intermediate temperature at which microorganisms grow best.. .between 45 degrees F and 100 degrees F.. When you get home from the grocery store, be sure to put away potentially hazardous foods immediately. Be sure storage containers are covered. Keep frozen foods solidly frozen. Refrigerate leftovers immediately. When preparing food with your hands, it is important to be sure your hands are clean; and if you have a cut or open sore on your hand, make sure the wound is sealed with a tape bandage before you handle food. Foods such as potato or egg salads or sandwich fillings are easily contaminated by Staphylococcus organisms from open sores or from coughing or sneezing over the food. Such contamination cannot be seen, tasted or smelled, but if the bacteria is on the food, it takes only three to five hours at room temperature to fill the food with the poisonous toxin of their growth.
