a SECTION 2-PAGE 1-PLAINDEALER--WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 1977 FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 19, 1927) Supervisor S.H. Freund of McHenry, a member of the county rights-of-way com mittee, reports that the rights- of-way on Route 61 have been secured from the Wisconsin line to Osborn's corners, two and one-half miles south of Richmond. The committee has been very successful in ef fecting settlements wherever there has been any damages incurred by the placing of the new state highway and it is expected that it will experience little, if any, trouble in securing the balance of the route, which connects with Route 19, near Crystal Lake. The activities which herald the approach of com mencement and the end of the school year, which means busy times especially for the members of the senior class, commenced on last Friday evening. At the time the Seniors were guests at the annual Prom given in their honor by the juniors the event being held at the high school. The Prom this year was a decided success with an attendance of more than 120 students and guests. N.C. Klein and John Bolger attended the annual convention of the Knights of Columbus at Ottawa last week. Mr. Bolger won the distinction of being chosen as one of the four state delegates to attend the national convention held at Portland, Ore., this year. And another honor given McHenry county was that of state treasurer of the Knights of Columbus, Walter F. Conway of Wood stock was unanimously picked to succeed himself, having already held the office one year. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 20, 1937) Although the belated spring has been a chilly one, with a white frost as recent as last Friday night, Nature is doing her best to make an advance and the country is again beautiful with fruit trees coming into full bloom, lawns and pastures are a beautiful green and gardens everywhere are lovely with early vari colored tulips and early spring flowers in bloom. Junior Bonslett and Jack Phalin narrowly escaped serious injuries last Thursday when they were burned and badly frightened by the ex plosion of a dynamite bomb supposed to have been left from the fireworks of last Fourth of July. The boys were mowing the lawn for Junior's grand father, William Bonslett, when they discovered what they thought was a big firecracker at the rear of the house and after examining it for a time they decided to light it and see if it would explode. The boys held a match at each end of the supposed firecracker and the bomb exploded sooner than expected. Junior was severely burned about the head and on his hand, but Jack escaped with only slight burns. One of the finest Boy Scout camps in the southern part of Wisconsin has been secured by the Blackhawk Area Council as their summer camping ground. The camp is situated on the northwest shores of Lake Delavan, approximately fourteen miles from Harvard. Many Scouts from Boone- McHenry district are planning on attending. McHenry Aces defeated Woodstock Sunday by the score of 17-3. McHenry did not have all their regulars on hand but GET PROFESSIONAL . carpet cleaning results! TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 29, 1952) Plans are progressing by members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars for the annual Memorial Day parade. The committee in charge of pie program and parade is well organized with William H. Althoff acting as general chairman and parade marshal. Harold Vycital and his com mittee will take care of the flag and grave registration, assisted by Ray Page and John Dreymiller. The McHenry Chamber of Commerce has sent out letters to local organizations and businesses requesting nominations and sponsorship of a candidate for Marine Day queen. Some fortunate girl will be selected bv popular vote in an election to be held Saturday, June 28. The second local young woman to arrive in Japan this spring to be with her husband is Shirley Hawley Woodward, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Hawley of Ringwood, Who set foot on Japanese land Friday, May 9. She was accompanied by her two young sons, John, Jr., 8, and Louis Edgar, 6, who have found that having a father choose the Army as a career means an active life. The elder boy has attended three schools although he is only in the third grade. Willie Klapperich reached pitcher's paradise last Sunday by pitching his Tiger mates to a no-hit, no-run, 28 to 0 victory over the McHenry Merchants at Johnsburg. Only two men reached base. Bud Meyer stepped to the plate seven times and scored seven runs. Art Jackson had a perfect day with 5 for 5. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 25, 1967) McHenry voters will go to the polls in the seven precincts customarily used for high school board elections when the public selects seven members of the junior college board, District 528, next Saturday. Mrs. Naomi Meyer and Charles "Chuck" Peterson are can didates from the unin corporated area of McHenry. Sunday, May 28, will be a joyous day for the congregation of Faith Presbyterian church at Chapel Hill and Lincoln roads as they attend church school and worship for the first time in their new church building. One of the highlights of the new sanctuary is the unique and unusual pulpit furniture and cross designed by the architect and built by one of the mem bers of the church. On Tuesday, May 30, McHenry will join with the nation in pausing to honor those who lost their lives in defending this country in time of war and so-called police actions. Walter Kuch of. the VtF.W. Post 4600 will act as parade marshal and Bernie Matchen American Legion Post 491, will be assistant marshal. The golf team had its most successful season for the past 10 years with 11 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie. The team beat Barrington 165 to 169 last Monday and the following day beat district winner Elgin Larkin 160-163. Encouraging not for Mr. Cuda's team is that Frank Cuda, Mark Domoto, Tim Martin and Bob Mauch will be back next year. Senior Tom Evans will be missed Save Space Avoid wasting precious freezer space by cluttering shelves with too many ice cube trays or foods which can be pure1 d inexpen sively throughout\ ar Save space ,for a var •' of often- needed foods HORNSBYS fami ly centers -- PRICES EFFECTIVE WED., MAY 18 THRU FRI.( MAY 20 •KN BART 9-9 VISA IMS 123 '•Sb W Prices oHecHvo while quantities last.
