PAGE 10-PLAINDEALER--WEDNESDAY. MAY 25. 1977 ThereV on Answer! by Norman Vincent Peale and Ruth Stafford Peale Faith When Things Go Wrong? Q. God took from me the only man I've ever loved and I've had cancer and lost my left leg. How does one believe that things will turn out right? It's already too late! How does one go on thinking positive thoughts? How? I wish it were that simple. It's easy to believe when things go along well in your life, but when things seem to build up from childhood from bad to worse-it isn't easy! I wish I had that unquestioning faith! A. We agree that iNs easier to believe that things will go well when they are going well. But faith was made, not just for easy going, but to be used when the going is tough, really tough. Now. let us correct you, in all kindness. God did not take the only man you ever loved. He died of one of the ways in which men die. And likewise your physical problem; God did not do that to you either. Always remember it is never too late to rebuild, even if the rebuilding is terribly difficult. Our suggestion is. start seeing an improved condition. Believe that God is helping you. Believe that you have the spiritual power to create a better life. Nobody has a completely unquestioning faith. Just take what little faith you have, like a grain of mustard seed, for example, and know that "all things are possible to him that believeth." We have a booklet. Try Faith and Watch What Happens, which has helped others with questions such as yours, and a copy of it is on its way to you. Anyone reading this column who wishes a free copy may write for one. Address your request to Dr. and Mrs. Peale, Box 500. Pawling NY 12564. Desperate To Lose Weight Q I am desperate to lose weight. I've tried but to no avail. I am four-feet, il-inches tall and am overweight about 20 pounds If I eat proteins or take vitamins I gain weight. If I don't eat anything all day I still gain. What I want to know is, why is this? I'm very heavy, and I don't feel good when I am this heavy. We have an exer cise wheel, and I get on it. I also have a rower exerciser, and I also bend over touching my toes. etc. Would you please tell me what to do about my weight? A. Maybe your problem is worry. Oftentimes people eat compulsively to compensate for feelings of anxiety. If you don't eat anything all day and you still gain, possibly it is because you eat too much the next day. You can lose weight if you will do two things: Get that desperate feeling under control by conquering your worries. And reduce your intake of food. P S. (from Dr. Peale) I know what I am talking about in regard to the latter, for I took off 35 pounds. And what's more- kept it off. So can you. Get your doctor to help you. He's ex perienced and can give you moral support. Boy Friend Divorced, Living With Ex-wife Q. I'm 20, never been married but I've got a little boy. I've been dating this guy for six months. But here's the problem. He's been divorced for about a year and a half, and now that we're getting serious about each other his ex-wife came back into his house where she is now staying. She wants him back. He says he can't ever take her back but needs time to tell her he doesn't want her. He won't let me call the house, because he doesn't want her to know about us. He says he doesn't want to lo6e me and God knows I can't or don't want to ever lose him. I love him, nd I don't know how long I can go on like this. It hurts so much. What else can I say or do to tell him it's either her or me, now or never? A If this man hasn't got what it takes to tell his ex-wife that he doesn't want her, it probably means that he is not sure that he doesn't want her. He doesn't need any time to tell her. All of which indicates that he likely does want to take her back-or that he really doesn't know what he wants at all. You might be better off to let this indecisive man go, and look for a good, steady man who will know for sure that he loves you. (Perhaps you would like to find an answer for yourself to a problem that you can share with others in There's An Answer! If there is something you would like to ask Dr. and Mrs. Peale to discuss in this column, write to them in care of Box 500, Pawling, NY 12564).
