Wolfe, executive director for the International CB Radio Operators association iCBA>. reports a warning to CB radio operators who may be operating with transmitters that have more power "output" than the FCC regulations allow • The FCC is very concerned that CB users who violate the federal rules regarding power output levels are the major cause of interference to television and radio set owners in their neighborhoods." reports Wolfe "The FCC began a nationwide crackdown on illegal CB linear amplifier', units recently. FREE CARTOONS, TOO! on linear amplifiers is going to be the firms who manufacture such units, and the firms that distribute and sell such units ' The FCC is being joined in this national crackdown by representatives from the justice department," reports CBA's Wolfe, "and they are very serious about cleaning up CB's airwaves." They will be operating with Search and Seizure warrants and their intention is to confiscate on the spot any unsold linear am plifier units. In a recently released study by the Federal Com munications commission, the federal agency revealed that they have studied reports of CB interference to radio and television reception throughout the United States The FCC has found that no less than 60 percent of the interference cases investigated are the direct result of the CB owner utilizing one of the already banned illegal linear power amplifiers "As long as these illegal units are bfing produced, being distributed, and being offered for sale, there are CB users who will buy them." comments CBA's Wolfe. "There are between 600,000 and 800,000 such illegal linear amplifiers now in the hands of the CBing public. Obviously, any attempt to seek out that many units and confiscate them by federal authorities would be far beyond the manpower capabilities of a federal agency," reports, Wolfe. "We, therefore, feel the FCC is doing the next best thing in this situation -shutting down the supply of amplifier units at their source." CBA's communication laboratory has done extensive investigation of the hazards of illegal CB amplifiers, and as reported in the March issue of a magazine (CBA's membership journal), the illegal units present only compounded problems for neighbor television watchers and radio listeners, but they also increase the chances of personal hazard. "Our lab found that under s o m e c l o s e - p r o x i m i t y situations the linear amplifiers can adversely affect heart- implanted pacemaker units, cause severe pain in people equipped with hearing aids.
