Add to it a long cigar, a fishing pole, an organ, and an ac­ cordion, and the trademark can only fit one person--and indeed it should, because there is only one Otto Pyritz. Staff photos by Wayne Gaylord Story series by Jeff Bonato The man who "wandered" over from Germany as a teenager, and, even today, still entertains at choral club performances and at the Masonic lodge, is as "happy" with his life as any man could be. Whether it be drawing on a cigar, dressing up and .playing the part of a vagabond to en­ thrall audiences, or simply sitting at home playing "The Happy Wanderer" on the organ, Mr. Pyritz is happy. He is probably happiest at the organ where, on this day, he presented a "private recital" for this writer's benefit. "My main thing is the organ," he said between numbers. "Music was my hobby since I was a baby. I like to entertain." Name it, and Otto Pyritz can play it. His repertoire spans the globe--including countless German numbers to which he also uses his fine singing voice to the accompaniment. And, what is truly remarkable, is that Mr. Pyritz can't read a single musical note. "I've never read a note. Everything is memorized," he said. "I couldn't tell you one note from the other, A, B, C, or whatever. I listen to songs and learn to play from listening." The song "The Happy Wanderer" is one of his favorites, and he said that the song, "hit me right off the bat. I liked it from the first time I heard it." Mr. Pyritz has lent his numerous talents to weddings, silver anniversaries, and golden anniversaries. He plays at every Masonic lodge meeting, and always appears with the McHenry Choral club- most recently with his ac­ cordion in a sing-along. "I love to entertain," he said. "My favorite has always been the choral club." He's been a McHenry Choral club member for numerous years, where he has been able to lend his powerful voice and his ability as a comedian to the shows. with... Green St. McHenry 385-5500 Mr. Pyritz came to America from Germany when he was fifteen years old. He came by himself, and settled in Chicago. "I used to live in Chicago and have a summer home in McHenry. The driving into the city each day was too much, so I turned the summer home into a regular house." He lived in the McCullom Lake area for many years, just recently moving into Lakeland Shores. From his job in Chicago, Mr. Pyritz knew the men's clothing business, and eventually worked for many years at McGee's Store For Men. But even with working fulltime, he always found time for his organ playing, which he still practices daily. He also always finds time for fishing. "I was fishing at one special spot here for thirty years," he said. "No one else was allowed, to fish there." That he used the same fishing hole for thirty years is evidence enough that the fishing was good there. Where the "hole" is located will remain a secret. Still being very much in­ volved with music, Mr. Pyritz talked about the type music which he finds is most popular. "Polkas are the biggest requests," he said. "Waltzes and slow songs are popular also. There isn't too much demand for that jazz stuff." There is a »arge demand for Otto Pyritz. On this day, someone called him with a request for a performance. "I don't do it so much anymore." What he does do is make people smile. "Performing is a lot of fun. There's nothing like music. It's my life." Music and singing and performing and fishing and having a cigar to draw from-- that's the world of Otto Pyritz The world of "The Happy Wanderer" is indeed a happy one. , Village of McHenry Shores Jude La Francis -- 385-5067 1 Ordinances Presented For Consideration At the village board meeting, May 18, the ordinance declaring the storing of junk and other waste material on private property to be a nuisance was read for the first time. Also read for the first time w&s the ordinance per­ taining to fees for further an­ nexations to the village. It was brought out at the meeting that the construction of new homes within the Shores has slowed down somewhat because several lots (23) have failed the perk test and are labeled unbuildable. More new street signs are to be put up. The next meeting of the village board is scheduled for June 1. The village board members continue to work hard for the residents of the village; however, they are beginning to feel that they are indeed alone in their travails. Input is wanted, though it is rarely presented to the board at the board meetings. Your ideas should be brought to the attention of the board members. Merely verbalizing your comments to your neigh­ bors does not guarantee their reaching the village board. Your presence at the meetings is indeed desired. CONDOLENCES We were sorry to hear about the death of Otto Mueller. Mr. Mueller, resident of the Shores for ten years, passed away May 15 at St. Mary of Nazareth hospital where he had been ill for three weeks. We wish to express our sympathy to the family and friends of Mr. Mueller, £> EVERY BLOOMING THING The Brownies of Troop no. 415 and the Girl Scouts of Troop no. 17 were busy planting flowers- geraniums and petunias- out side the village hall and the annex. They did a nice job; the flowers brighten up the front of both buidlings. Those girls from Troop no. 417 are certainly an active group. As a reward for selling so many Girl Scout cookies, the troop was no. 1 in the area - the girls were able to attend Great America last weekend. The nineteen girls were ac­ companied by their leader Pat Einweck and four mothers. They had a fantastic time, and they're positive they will try to top this year's cookie sales next year. -WEDNESDAY, MAY 25, 1977 The Girl Scouts are also busy preparing for their German festival. Don't forget to attend the festival which will run from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 28, at the village hall annex. BIRTHDAYS A big happy birthday goes to Joyce Lexow and Marcia Henshall who share a birthday May 29. And Tony Einweck celebrates his seventh bir­ thday May 29. SHORELINE CLUB May 19 the ladies met at the village hall annex for an evening of fun and games. Prizes were won by all who attended. An evening of dinner and a play is being planned for sometime in July. The Shady Lane playhouse in Marengo will be the site of this 'couples' affair. More information on this will be forthcoming. There is also another bowling party planned for sometime in June or August. Flyers will be sent out to inform all residents of these various events. When patience retires, love keeps working.
