For more information, please call Pet Welfare at 385-1771. by Erika Frey HOT CARS AND DOGS My three dogs love to go for a ride in the car no matter if it's night or day or what the weather is like. In the spring and fall I try to take them whenever possible and I do enjoy their company. However, in the summer heat a car can be very dangerous for a pet. Air-conditioned cars are fine, but who, nowadays, can afford to keep the air-conditioning going in the car while shopping or visiting a friend. On a hot summer day the inside of a car heats very quickly. On an 85 degree day, for'example, the temperature inside your car - with the windows slightly opened - will reach 102 degrees in 10 minutes. In 30 minutes it will go up to 120 degrees. On warmer days it will go even higher. A dog's normal body tem perature is 101.5 to 102.2 degrees Fahrenheit. A dog can withstand a body temperature of 107-108 degrees Fahrenheit for only a very short time before suffering irreparable brain damage - or even death. The Iclosed car interferes with the dog's normal cooling process, that is, evaporation through panting. If your dog is overcome by heat exhaustion, you can give immediate first aid by im mersing him or her in cold water until body temperature is lowered. Then have your veterinarian examine your pet immediately or as soon as possible. DOGS FOE ADOPTION Cockapoo, male, 8 weeks, white, will be medium. Need Area Families To Host Foreign Students Remodeling? If you're planning to remodel your kitchen, install the refrig erator in the coldest part of the room--thus, it will use less en ergy to operate. Families in Illinois can have an unusal international ex perience in their very own homes this year. "We are inviting Illinois families to share their daily life with a student from another country," said Jeanne G. Jacob, Illinois director of Youth for Understanding In ternational Student Exchange program. "Families, in return, will have the unique op portunity to learn about a different culture through another person's eyes, while deepening their appreciation of their own country by in troducing America to someone new." Liisa Vaara of Finland and Keija Saito of Japan will be coming to Illinois this August tor a one-year stay. They are part of a larger group t)f 3,500 students from Europe, South America, Asia, and Africa, selected by committees in their own countries to travel to and live in American communities for a year. The young people, age fourteen through eighteen come from diverse backgrounds and lifestyles, but they all have a common dream. A student from Venezuela describes it well : "I am very happy to be able to have this kind of opportunity, living with an American family-participating and helping in their day-to-day living. I have always dreamed Of coming to this great country and having the experience of learning new customs, especially American customs,, as they are very valuable and important in my point of view. I am looking forward to meeting new people, especially young people of my own age. I think that life is beautiful when we exchange ideas and opinions and share with each other." Ms. Jacob said that Youth for Understanding needs more host families for the arriving students. The only requirement for becoming a host family is a willingness to accept a young person from another country into the everyday life of your family, so the student and family members can share an enriching experience. The host family provides meals, lodging, companionship and love. Students become members of their new families and have the same responsibilities and C3 •GOLF BALLS 3 PAK MCHENRY CITGO QUIK MART We Honor: Union '76-Mastercharge-Citgo Charge Cards! •TENNIS BALLS 3 PAK ..W000000000000000000000000000009000000000000000000000900000900000000900000000000000000000000000000000000000C .^oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooc ^oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo .Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooeooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooc ^Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooeoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooonooooooo Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooc J00oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo»ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooc ^o'ooooocoooooVooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ^ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooeoof" . joooooooooooooooooooop®*®®®®"'" oOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOuOOOO • 0000000000000000000000000* OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO^B P^OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO<«tad • JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM PjOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM • .ooooooooooooooooooorw oooooooooooooooooootad JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO .OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO' ooooooooooooooooor •ooooooooooooooooc oooooooonoooooooc ,000000 0000000000 0000000000000000' ,000000000000000^ ooooooooooooooor oooooooooooooo ?S£.4 YOUR CHOICE! •COKE •FRESCA SPRITE •RC ^*TAB •COKE •TAB • 7-UP(REG.0R DI •DIET RITE •REG.
