PAGE 6-PIAINDEALER--WEDNESDAY MAY 25 1977 us I .a.v'V •• <** •• •«v A SHUTOUT for Warrior pitcher Lee Steinsdoefer. Protecting a one run, first inning lead, Steiny walked 2 and struck out 2 as he pitched a 5 hitter and collected his third conference win with a 1-0 win over the Zion-Benton Zee-Bees last Thursday. The victory evened his conference record and increased his overall to 5 and 4. The Warriors also increased their overall record to 15-11. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Warriors Continue To Play Role Of Spoilers By Dick Rabbitt Coach Ken Swanson's McHenry high baseball Warriors, although not in contention for the league crown, are the most talked about team in the North Suburban. Several weeks ago the Zion ZeeBees shut out the Warriors on a no hitter. Thursday this same Zion club tied with Lake Forest for the lead, fell to the Warriors behind the fine pitching of Lee Steinsdoerfer 1 to 0. In the meantime, the Libertyville "Wildcats, last year's defending champs, and second place , finishers in the state, slowly- crept into first place. After the Warriors blew a 2 to * 0 lead and went down to an 8 to 4 defeat at the hands of the Wildcats in the first game of a - doubleheader Saturday, it was a festive crowd in Libertyville ;about 1 p.m. on Saturday. At three o'clock the tide had ' turned, as the Warriors, behind 'thecombined pitching of Bobby Sharp and reliever Dave * Covalt, dealt a mighty blow to the Wildcats by the score of 7 to 6. Twice the Warriors came from behind in the second game to gain and win. Leading 6 to 4 in the top of the seventh, Klugmann hit a two run homer over the right field fence to tie it at six apiece. In the bottom of the seventh with a good crowd on hand, including this reporter, Brian DiBlassi walked to start the inning. Doug Oeffling laid down a perfect bunt and beat the throw, to place runners on first and second. "Crusher" Swanson then ordered John Meyers to bunt, and the young lad responded with a likewise perfect bunt, although being thrown out, advanced the runners to second and third. With a pulled infield, and outfiled, and two strikes on him. Mark "Roy" Rogers hit the clutch pitch beyond the shortstop's reach for the game winning hit. To say the least the young lad was mobbed by his teammates for the effort that he put forth. A happy Coach Swanson was indeed proud of his Warriors for their fine effort for the day. At left, shortstop Steve Mai. after fielding a grounder, flips the ball to second baseman Bob Adams, who tags second (forcing the runner, not shown) and throws to first baseman Jim Koester. The batter is out by a number of steps as the Warriors protect their one-run lead. Along with excellent pitching, the Warrior defense held together for a 1-0 win over the Zee-Bees. (STAFF PHOTOS-WAYNE GAYLORD) "Steiny" Shuts Out Zeebee Nine 1-0 By Dick Rabbitt Lee "Steiny" Steinsdoerfer, senior righthander of Coach Ken Swanson's McHenry high baseball Warriors, shut out the Zion ZeeBees and knocked them out of first place last Thursday in the North Suburban The score was 1 to 0. The only run of the game was scored in the first inning as Mark Rogers walked. After Jeff Meyers flied out, Rogers went to second on Steve Mai's grounder to second, and then Jim Koester's hit to right scored Mark for the only run of the game. The lanky righthander gave up five hits, struck out eight, and the Warriors played flawless ball behind him to win their sixth game in the North Suburban conference this season. Must have been thinking of Bobby's younger brother. Have heard the Cubs have Bill stashed away in the minor's for the future. If that answer doesn't suit you. Bob. let me know and I'll think of another one. The McHenry Rotary Club celebrated its twenty-second anniversary last Thursday night at McHenry Country Club in one of the best dinner-party events we ever attended. The kitchen put out a meal fit for a king, then came the program. The "Andrews Sisters" were in rare form as they delighted the crowd. One of the "girls" has a mustache. Next came a performer who would make you a believer in this ESP business. You couldn't do all those things if you were wired in on thoughts of people in the crowd. Too bad the lowly Detroit Tigers had to find their claws when they came to Comiskey Park and swept the White Sox off their feet. Now we look for the Sox to bounce back into their winning ways. The Mel Prusts have invited us to join them in a trip to Milwaukee Wednesday night to see the Sox and Brewers do battle. Happy days! Attended the marriage of our niece, Julie Freund, to Alan Bednar Sunday in Richmond and saw several girls cry. Decided some cried because they didn't have a man and others shed a few tears because they did. They all recovered nicely and had a gay old time at the Johnsburg Community Club where Marie Oeffling and her able crew served a real spread. (All this is tough on a fellow on a diet). Mike Burman Qualifies For State Finals As 2-Miier Mike Burman, a junior two miler on Coach Wally Scott's McHenry high track team, qualified for the state finals at Charleston next week by winning the Belvidere District in the time of 9:33.5. The young righthander struck out 13 and issued only 1 walk. The young lad, pitching his finest game of the season retired the 1st seventeen batters he faced, as he was backed up by the fine hitting of Henry Glick and Tim Frantz who each knocked in three runs for the win. Both Glick and Frantz had triples, and Tim Zeller added a double to the attack. The young Warriors had 9 hits for the afternoon, and committed only one error.
