Really bad weather can slice four or five miles off the carrying power of a gallon of fuel, and some opti­ mum conditions can actually improve fuel economy. The estimated fuel economy figures published for each brand of car by the Environ­ mental Protection Agency, for instance, assume the air temperature is a balmy 70 de­ grees. Even moderately cold winter weather reduces fuel efficiency; EPA says when the thermometer drops to 20 de­ grees, motorists can expect the distance traveled on a tank of gas to drop about 8 per cent, with more loss on colder days. Wet roads from rain or snow can lead to a further loss of 10 per cent, the agency says. Strong breezes also affect how much fuel a car has to call up to cover a mile. A wind of 18 miles an hour, for instance, can cut mileage 10 per cent if it is blowing the opposite direction from the way the car is traveling. If it is a crosswind, the loss is a minor 1 per cent. But a wind of the same intensity blowing the same way the vehicle is moving is a real friend, im­ proving fuel economy by about 12 per cent, according to EPA estimates. r SERVICE NEWS 1 England Assignment For Airman Airman Christian J. Goet- schel, son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Goetschel of McHenry, has received a new assignment following graduation from the avionic systems equipment specialist course conducted by the Air Training command at Lowry AFB, Colo. Airman Goetschel, trained to perform maintenance on in­ tegrated airborne equipment, will go to Lakenheath RAF station, England, for duty with a unit of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe. Completion of the course enables the airman to receive academic 1 credits through the Community College of the Air Froce. The airman is a 1976 graduate of McHenry Com­ munity high school.
