ANNIVERSARY Belated anniversary greetings to Harriet and Jack VanKanegan, married twenty- seven years ago May 27 and to Pete and Ann Mrowka, married twenty-nine years ago May 29. REMEMBER WHEN .. Being an old timer in Wonder Lake, we remember when some things were different. How about you other old timers? What do you remember? Give a call. We'd like to hear. Forinstance, remember when...we bought our groceries at the Handy Pantry, or Vaculas and Russ's...remember when we had a local newspaper, the Party Line...remember when Wonder Lake had a Chamber of Commerce...remember when Christ the King church was in the basement which is now the A m e r i c a n L e g i o n hall...remember when Ethel VanKanagen played her Kazoo (or whatchamacalit) and sang and entertained like no one else we've ever seen - at Van's. HAPPINESS IS... Happiness is...a sandbox full of sand, awaiting small hands and pails and shovels and toys and a trip to the house in cuffs, hair and shoes. Happiness is...finally convincing mom that you're old enough to go fishing with the gang. Happiness is...being grateful to all the teachers who have spent the last nine months educating our children and also to the rest of the staff at school, from superintendent to janitor, for their important part in the lives of our kids. Have a good summer, all of you,! Honored-53 Years Apart When Scott Crittenden graduated from McHenry high school last week, he was one of those recognised as a member of the National Honor society for two years. But maybe this honor was to be expected, for his grandfather, Joseph D. Crittenden, was nominated for NHS in its third year of inception, 1924, at Libertyville high school. He recently moved to 1012 Florence, McHenry. Scott is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Crittenden. Schaffer In Opposition Declaration Of Party Affiliation In Senate State Sen. Jack Schaffer. R- Cary. has alerted 33rd district residents that legislation requiring voters to declare their political party affiliation at least twenty-eight days prior to the primary has been resurrected again in the Senate. The bill is SB 168. Schaffer said the measure would prevent people from voting in a primary election unless they previously declared their party preference. The bill narrowly passed out of the Happiness is...walking barefoot in the grass, after a rainfall. Happiness is...the Jack Liggett family, spending a weekend with former Wonder Lakers, the Jack Vanek family in Richland Center, Wis. Happiness is,..welcoming to our country Bernard Huileux of France, who is visiting his sisters, Jackie Mortimer . of Wonder Lake and Monique Kopp of McHenry. Bon jour, Bernard! Happiness is...Frank and Audrey Jackson, graduating their fifth son, Jeff, from Harrison school Wednesday, May 25. Happiness is...the "sweet" things in life. COMMUNITY CALENDAR June 4 and 5, registration, swimming lessons, Wonder Lake Woman's club, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 13 -17, Vacation church school, Nativity Lutheran church, 9 to 11:30 a.m. June 20 - 24, Girl Scout day camp, Harrison Benwell Conservation area. Senate last week and is now in the Illinois House. Schaffer expressed the hope that the Illinois House would kill the bill or that Governor Thompson would veto it. He pointed out that the bill is supported by Chicago Democrats and some Republicans who see the bill as a device for strengthening the power of the two major party organizations. "I am all for the two-party system, and I count myself as a loyal Republican," Schaffer stated, "but I don't believe party strength will be in creased by disenfranchising millions of voters throughout the state." Schaffer noted at this point in time this bill would strike a near death blow to the Illinois Republican party due to the fact that the only portion of the state organized effectively enough to make this bill work is the eity of Chicago with its e n t r e n c h e d D e m o c r a t i c machine. This is a time when Republican leaders should be trying to bring more people into the party - not exclude them, he added. Schaffer said such correspondence should be sent to Governor James Thompson, Representatives Thomas J. Hanahan, Calvin L. Skinner, Jr., and R. Bruce Waddell.
