Richard Swantz has announced that McHenry Ccffomunity high school has once again recieved ac creditation from North Central association for the 1976-77 school year. Accreditation is given annually to schools that qualify. "Once every seven years each NCA school must undergo a comprehensive self-study followed by an NCA evaluation team review," Swantz ex plained. "Our school was last evaluated in 1971. During the interim years each school is accredited on the basis of its report on the existing con ditions in the school." The North Central association is the largest of the country's regional accrediting agencies. It is a voluntary league of over 4,300 secondary schools, over 800 colleges and universities and 118 elementary schools in a nineteen-state region. The association works with individual schools to improve the quality of education through a continuous process of evaluation and accreditation. Quality education, an ideal in the past, is an imperative today. North Central association accreditation and evaluation offer both a framework and an effective tool to help schools clarify their goals, recognize their strengths and limitations, and implement processes and programs to help meet the needs of today's students. NCA membership offers both a base for new programs and also a control to keep schools on the most productive educational course. (Facts From McHenry Com munity High School) OUTDOOR CLUB Canoe Trip Brings Sunburns A'plenty The McHenry High School Outdoor club is a fast growing activity. A number of students have been involved this year through a variety of activities through the Outdoor club. These include cross-country skiing, bicycling, and canoeing. Recently fifteen members of the Outdoor club and their sponsors took a weekend trip to canoe the Wisconsin rivejr. They spent from Friday evening through Sunday af ternoon floating downriver from Sauk city to Spring Green, Wis. Elm St. McHenry, III. 385-0722 part of the weekend was the first evening when they camped under the stars on an island in the middle of the river. In addition to learning how quickly you can sunburn on a canoe trip, the students also learned that canoe trips early enough in the season can be more enjoyable since there are no annoying bugs. Other highlights of the trip included climbing some of the beautiful river bluffs from which they could view a three mile vista. The group also visited the tower Hill State Park and its historic shot mine where, in the 1800's, gun shot was made. In order to be eligible to participate in the trip, all students were expected to pass a tip test in a canoe. These had been arranged previously as an activity of the club and the training sessions were held at either McCullom Lake or the West campus pool. Although they didn't receive any training in how to cook, each student was responsible for one meal for their group. In spite of the lack of experience, all agreed that they ate well on the trip. Faculty sponsors who ac companied the group were Miss Linda Elliott, Jim Meeker, Pat Kallaus, and Don Sea ton. Plans are under way for an additional trip before the summer begins. Dairy Product Fluid dairy products can be ex pected to keep for at least ten days after processing. Keeping quality is determined by care given by store personnel and con sumers. Temperature is the primary factor. It must be kept at 40 degrees or below. (Editor's note: This is the twenty-ninth in a series of especially written articles for McHenry county readers. Joseph Cools is a psychologist on the Family Service and Community Mental Health staff. This article is "Coping - Sleepwalking.") Sleepwalking in children is not normally associated with severe emotional problems, although tension, excitement or a traumatic event may trigger episodes of sleepwalking in the child. Unless the symptom persists over a long period of time, no particular treatment is warranted. The child, although in a deep sleep, may perform some rather complicated tasks while sleepwalking, such as getting dressed, getting a drink of water, or getting out a toy. There are some miscon ceptions about sleepwalking that do not have any basis in fact. One misconception is that it is harmful to awaken the child while he is sleepwalking. Usually it is not necessary to awaken the child to lead him back to bed, but it does no harm. Another misconception is that the child is acting out a dream. Recent research, however, has shown that sleepwalking takes place during the non-dreaming stage of sleep. In many children, sleep walking appears to be associated with anxiety over separation from the mother. In other children, fear of death during sleep appears to be a cause. In . severe cases requiring treatment, it is im portant to find the possible reasons for the sleepwalking Stimulating activity should be avoided two to three hours before bedtime. Medication is also available but is avoided in all but the most severe cases. Big Pie The largest apple pie in the world was baked in Knowlesville. New York in August. 1976.
