PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1, 1977 It $ A Man's World Robert Thompson There is only one Garden of Eden. And to walk through it was the exclusive province of Adam and Eve. However, what may be the next best thing in gardens is right in McHenry, and one suspects that Robert and Fannie get as much exhilaration from walking through their garden as the more famous couple did many moons ago. It's a garden of peonies and gladiolas and iris, all planted and cared for by Robert Thompson. In a city that is growing and changing as rapidly as McHenry is, it is nice to see some things that remain the same--and as certain as taxes and that other thing, it's guarenteed that come summer there will be a beautiful garden Staff photos by Wayne Gaylord Story series by Jeff Bonato in the Thompson's backyard. Another thing that doesn't change is the glow both Mr. Thompson and his wife, Fan nie, get in their eyes as they walk through their garden on a warm summer-like day. They have been married for fifty-six years, but they have the look of teenagers in love when they gaze out their back window at row upon row of blooming flowers. For Mr. Thompson, this year's flower garden is just another in an unending series of colorful efforts which began somewhat by accident long ago. The year was 1915, and Mr. Thompson was farming 150 acres on the Owen farm, now the location of the McHenry Country club. A man by the name of Chester Goodman was the closest neighbor to the farm, and he was very interested in flowers. "He would always rent one- half acre or a full acre and grow just flowers on it," Mr. Thompson recalled. From having a neighbor interested in flowers, Mr. Thompson became an en thusiast also. Soon he was growing flowers also. Perhaps many area residents are aware that Mr. Thompson "invented" the Victory Peony from seed. The new flower has been an award winner for him on numerous occasions. Mr. Thompson has a garden full of blue ribbons, including some international honors which he has been accorded. That it takes patience to grow beautiful flowers can be borne out by the length of time it took Mr. Thompson to grow his Victory Peony. "We'd plant them, and the first year there would be nothing," he said. "The second year the plant would come up, but it was five years before they would bloom." Besides his gardening ex pertise, the Thompsons have another unique distinction. They have visited every state in the Continental United States. "Robert had two weeks' vacation every year, and we planned trips," Mrs. Thompson said. "We took camping equipment, tents, etc. and even spent one night on the Atlantic ocean in a sailboat." Mr. Thompson is quite a history buff, and recalls vividly the explosion in 1907 which struck the canning factory, on which ground the McHenry Lumber company now exists. In fact, he worked for thirty - six years at the lumber com pany, hand-in-hand with Joe Williams and Mildred Hill. "Joe drove the truck and I worked in the yard," he said. For his outstanding service at the lumber company, Mr. Thompson received a watch from the company when he retired. Still, everything comes back to his flowers. "He's out there every minute of the day," his wife said. ^ The fruit of his labor is ob vious.
