May 30, Memorial day was very ap propriately observed by McHenry and its citizens and guests. The weather, which had been cold and rainy, proved to be more favorable bringing many tourists and filled our city with visitors, friends, and former residents from far and near The city, however, was prepared with a spirit of welcome in observance of the day shown by the many flags in the business sections and at < nearly every home in the community. Cup has to be won three times for ownership. Mr Galitz also wins a gold medal which will be suitably engraved Dr Johnson and E E Bassett were tied for second prize. Work on the cement road is progressing nicely. On Friday a strip of quick drying cement was laid on Waukegan street at the road leading to the Borden factory. The next morning planks were laid and farmers were able to get to the factory as usual. The stretch of cement west of the railroad tracks wi opened to traffic on Saturday^ About 1.400 admissions were sold at the Fox pavilion at it sixth annual opening on Saturday. May 28, which was continued on Sunday and Monday. The Fox featured Johnny Constantine and his Rhythm Kings of Chicago. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 3, 1937) Charter night for the McHenry Lions club, June 8, will bring many members of surrounding clubs to the Riverside hotel for a banquet and program. Arrangements for the event are about com pleted by the Charter night committee, of which Floyd E. Covalt is the chairman. The Elgin and Woodstock clubs will act as co-sponsors for the new McHenry club. The speaker of the evening will be Melvin Jones, who organized the Lions International and who is the present secretary-general. The subject of his address will be "Founding of Lionism". Ideal summer weather, too hot for comfort, brought thousands of people from Ch- ciago and the suburbs into the country over the Decoration day weekend where they sought pleasure at lakes, on the beaches or motoring through the wooded country. Business here was the best it had been in several years and prospects for a good season are anticipated. Friends here will be in terested to learn that Herman Nye, a representative of the Upjohn Drug company, has been transferred from Freeport to Aurora. Mrs. Nye and two children are spending the week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Freund, while their household goods are being moved to Aurora. Anita Althoff was proclaimed tennis champion at the high school this week, defeating her cousin, Eleanor Althoff, in the final play-off on the high school tennis courts. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 12, 1952) The Fox river claimed another victim, its fourth thus far this season, last Sunday morning. June 8, Ernest A. Hampton, 28, of Maywood, was the second fisherman from the Chciago area to lose his life near the dam within the past month. The second drowning of last weekend occcurred at Meyers bay, Pistakee Lake, in the sudden squall of early af ternoon, Sunday. The victim was Mrs. Louise Pauhl of Ch ciago, who lost her life after the boat in which she was riding capsized in the storm. FORMAL WEAR RENTALS for ALL OCCASIONS *R ITMHUM ^?HN^Grce^5L^lcgnry The McHenry Shamrocks lost their second straight game last Sunday as Johnsburg ended up on the long end of a 6 to 3 score. Klapperich pitched for the Tigers and kept the nine hits he allowed very well scattered. The Johnsburg Junior baseball team played its first game Wednesday, June 3, and defeated Dundee by a score of 2 to 0. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 8 1967) Sunday, Ju/ie 11, special services will be held for the dedication of the new Faith Presbyterian church building. A service of dedication and consecration will be held at 11 a.m. Guest preacher will be Allan E. Schoff, the Synod executive for the denomination in Illinois. The architect will attend to present the keys of the church to the building com mittee chairman. Edward Frett of Johnsburg sustained an injured arm and had five stitches taken in his nose when his car struck a Chicago & Northwestern railroad train early Saturday morning. Mr. Frett was enroute to work at the Modine plant and applied the brake* •• he approached the crossing. They failed and the auto rolled into the second car of the commuter train which was just pulling away from the Ringwood station. \ At the May 31, retail com mittee meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, Donald Weingart told members of his contact with city officials regarding improved lighting in the business district. A fourteen-year-old McHenry area youth was confined to the juvenile home in Waukegan last weekend after he was apprehended by city police as he left Riverside Retail Outlet. Police were alerted to a possible burglary about 11:30 p.m. when persons in the neigh borhood heard noises in the buildings. • • • • Every business, to the outsider, is a source of easy and large profits. PAGE 11-PLAINDEALER--FRIDAY, JUNE 3, 1977 Sunnyside Area Betty Messer 344-2494 Cerebral Patty Victims Benefit From Recital A local dance school under the direction of Barbara Klein gave a recital Friday, May 20. It was held at the West campus of the McHenry high school. The $267 proceeds of this recital will go to benefit Cerebral Palsy victims. The girls put in many hours of practice and rehearsals. The girls and their teacher should be commended for their work and the desire to help other children. The girls range in age from 4 to 13. The stars from the Sun- nyside-Pistakee area are: Stephanie May, Chris May, Angie DeWolf, Tracy Hiller, Terry Beuter, Jody Beuter, Kim Jauques, Dawn Kussman, Debbie Clary, Tracy Schmidtt, and Judy Schmidtt. RESPONSE Several people called in response to last week's article on the beach and park area in Pistakee Terrace.. Interested people would like to see the same sort of interest taken in the Sunnyside area. An item mentioned was a lot owned by the village at Lakeview and Riverview. It used to be cut and maintained as a place for children to play. At the present time small children down in that area play in the street. The beach at Riverview and Sunnyside drive is another area. The grass is kept cut, but the playground equipment is badly in need of repair. The area is changing. New young people are moving in with young children. There is a need for a safe place for the children to play. INJURED Tom Miller of 1416 Bayview lane was seriously injured Saturday, May 21. Tom was on the way home from work when the accident occurred. He was taken by the Rescue squad to the McHenry hospital where he will remain for about a month. Tom is recovering nicely. Tom and his wife, Dawn, are expecting their second child the end of July. Friends and neigh bors wish you a speedy recovery.
