But Marie's bus is no more, at least not as a mode of transportation for McHenry school students. Very'recently it was put to rest in grand style, including appropriate drapings, a "Rest in Peace" sign - and even a few tears. And maybe it was appropriate that this very special bus should have been accorded full honors for it has served Marie, and the local school districts, well. The bus was purchased in 1970, and in the past seven years has covered 93,000 miles with the precious cargo of many thousands of school children. In recent months the bus has giv^n its driver some difficulty, but nothing that failed to respond to the touch of a good mechanic. The appearance of the bus remained, as it always had, under the caressing care of Marie, who used a polishing rag. on it as she would use a wash cloth on a child. Finally, the day of reckoning came. Marie, with children aboard, was on Rt. 120 when the bus broke down. This time the word "down" was described to her as meaning the vehicle was beyond repair for the role it had faithfully served those seven years. And so plans went forward for a fitting tribute. Transportation Director Richard Glawe, thirty bus drivers and Dispatcher Peg Stevens arrivedfet the bus lot on Kane avenue to pay final tribute. Each was wearing a black arm band. The organization is the Fox Valley Humane Education society. Its first project since in­ corporation in March of this year, is to co-sponsor a summer day camp program for McHeni*y and Kane counties in cooperation with the Humane society of North Central Illinois in South Elgin. There will be three weeks scheduled for McHenry county - July 18-22; Aug. 1-5; and Aug. 15-19. Those interested may register now. Deadline for registration is June 25. Enrollees will share a fun-filled week with animals. They will visit a farm, a zoo, a riding stable, an animal shelter, and a nature center. They will see wildlife in natural and un­ natural habitats, watch a dog obedience demonstration and a dog grooming demonstration. They will learn all about animals, how to administer animal first aid; how to pet-sit; and how to locate pets in our lost and found pet patrol. They will enjoy horseback riding and hay rides, nature and wildlife, watch movies and listen to guest speakers. Needed are junior coun­ sellors (ages 13 through 15 years) and senior counsellors (ages 16 through 60 years). Counsellors will be volunteers; however, all of their expenses will be paid.
