PAGE 2-PLAINDEALER--FRIDAY. JUNE 3, 1977 mm Veterans Enjoy Outing r ..v-j*-. c. It was the week prior to Memorial day, and con versation at the Harold "Pat" Owen home, 608 Country club drive, quite naturally turned to the annual observance when veterans met Thursday af ternoon. More than twenty veterans of Wojrld War I who belong to McHenry barracks, No. 1315, ranging in age from the youngest, at 80, to the oldest, 90, gathered for their first social gathering outside the Legion clubhouse in ten years. The number represented almost half of the present mem bership. Wives of many of the veterans were also present to enjoy the day on the beautiful, shaded Owen lawn while the veterans viewed posters and other mementos of the war years. Area Girls Entered In Dairy Princess Contest Eight daughters of McHenry eounty farmers are entered in the McHenry county Dairy Princess contest. Entry deadline is this week and the candidates have begun 1977 dairy promotion activities. Led by Connie Harrison, reigning McHenry county Dairy Princess, candidates welcomed the public to a county shopping center where a 14-day-old Holstein calf was the center of attention. The black and white animal was provided by John Pfingsten, Ridgefield dairy farmer. This week, candidates will meet with MisS Harrison to learn additional promotional projects which will include radio and television ap pearances, and distribution of dairy products to McHenry County board members June 21. GREEN ST., McHENRY 385-3120 % Historical Society To Hold Director Election The annual meeting of the McHenry county Historical society will be held Sunday, June 12, at 2 p.m. at the museum in Union, 111. Election of directors will take place. The society still lacks directors from Riley, Seneca, and Hartland, and if any person from these townships is in terested in carrying on the work and purposes of the society in preserving the history of McHenry county, wishes to become a member of the board, and wants to have his or her name placed in nomination from the floor, please call the president, Dorothy W. McEachren of Woodstock. The program will be a demonstration of the skill of weaving, and will be given by Dorothy Muench of Marengo. She has her own Australian wheel. As yet, the museum's flax and wool wheels are not usable, nor are the two historic looms. It is hoped that someone will be found to restore these so they can be used for demon strations. Recently, more display space was installed by putting up more peg boards for hanging smaller items, and by con structing a platform under the length of window in Eckert hall on which are placed corn shelters, plows, and cultivators. The peg boards were donated by area businesses. Among recent acquisitions installed are a truss from the old Pearl street bridge, McHenry, and porch railing from the first church in Spring Grove, courtesy of Alice Weber, Spring Grove. Also added to the museum are a chimney for the brass embossed kerosene lamp from a Woodstock business, and the history of Harvard through the courtesy of Mayor LeFew and the City Council. The society is requesting allocations from the Federal Revenue-sharing program from all of the cities, villages, townships, and the county board. A full report on this project will be made later. More and larger signs are being made for items that are attracting the interest of visitors. Alice Clark of Woodstock can use more volunteer docents (guides) for the days the museum is open. She reports larger and in terested groups . of school children are going through the exhibits. Museum hours are Sundays from 1 to 4:30 p.m., and as soon as schools are out, on Wednesdays at the same hours. The fiscal year has been changed to begin June 1. All dues are payable as of June 1, and it will expedite the work at the membership table if dues are mailed in advance to Leta Clark, membership chairman, Box 434, Union, 111. 60180. In lessons thus far, the girls have been working on exercise and makeup, and at this time they are practicing for next week's dress rehearsal. Those who have observed the charm course sessions feel judges will have a difficult time choosing one queen out of nine lovely candidates. In recent days, participants have settled into a variety of jobs at local establishments, all of which have cooperated in allowing the girls to be away from work for the contest.
