PAGE 7-PLAINDEALER--FRIDAY, JUNE 3, 1977 Mai and Steinsdoerfer Win All Conference Honors By Dipk Rabbitt Seniors Steve Mai a short stop, and Lee Steinsdoerfer a pitcher on Coach Ken Swan- son's McHenry high baseball team were selected by the league coaches on Tuesday for All Conference honors. Steve hit .326 and committed only 6 errors in 76 chances the past conference season. Steinsdoerfer,' although win ning only 4 and losing 3, had the respect of the coaches for his clutch pitching this season. Congratulations to both young men for the fine job this s e a s o n . Tied for third place the team of Ray Spiess, Norm Simon, Bob Schmaling and Jim Kenton, and the team of Ed Buss, Bart Winn, Dick Doherty and Ed Ray. Congratulations to the winners on their fine play for this ttfo day touranment. The first round of the Directors' tournament will be played at the club on Sunday, June 5. i DIVOT DOLLS M.C.C. Although the sun shone brightly as the ladies of McHenry Country club teed off Tuesday for their annual Flag Day tournament, a downpour of rain in mid-morning drove groups of them back to the club house. Undeterred by such a temporary inconvenience they resumed their play (following a drying-out and coffee-break period) to produce, four fine winners. Shooting one of the best games in her golf career to date, Nancy Wilkins emerged the winner in Class A. A newcomer to our ranks at the club, Lou Roels, played a steady game to become the winner in Class B. Class C found Joan Schlosky its winner and in Class D it was Gloria Spiess. Congratulations to each of these gals. Only a couple of birdies were' registered on this the last day of May, both on the par-3 number 9 hole. Marge Blomquist and Nell Fidler each had a deuce on the 163-yearder. It's good to have Nell back in the swing of things after her long lay-off due to an injured shoulder. Welcome back, Nell! Meanwhile, the Nifty-Niners were involved in a completely different event. The Double Enns swung into their "Most Pars or Under" event only to have Mil Hansen take the lead and hold it to become the winner/That gal is a winner all the way! With early tee-times the gals were able to finish early and return to the club house in time to have lunch together as a group. And, from the lunch table came the tales of some of the happenings which occurred earlier out on the links. Perched on the edge of the sandtrap at No. 15 Pat Sullivan sank her 30-foot ap proach. Pat is not the fainting type but we understand she floated over the final three fairways back to the club. In a different vein Debbie Johnson There are more than 3.2 million veterans receiving monthly compensation or pension checks from the Veterans administration. reported a tale of frustration. She claims to have hit every tree on the course. At last count there were better than three hundred of Nature's graceful creations affording shade and shelter out there. The stellar attraction of the morning (which the roving photographer missed) seemed to be the acrobatics performed by Mil Hansen and Alta Gehrke along the banks of the creek at No. 17. Undaunted by the lack of a mechanical ball retriever, the two gals determined to rescue their wet balls from what appeared to them at the time to be the Grand Canyon creek. Prone on their stomachs at nearly 90-degree angles nothing was showing but the soles of their shoes. Recognition was made by their golfmates who finally rescued them by pulling them back to the fairway by their heels. The good Samaritans remain nameless. Such was Ladies' day at McHenry. Happy Golfing!
