Wonder Lake Mary Jean Huff . 728-0267 Baseball (Season Officially Opens In Wonder Lake Memorial day was also opening day for Wonder Lake boys baseball. The ceremonies began at Christ the King field at 1:30 p.m. with a moment of silence. President of the league, Carl Kiernan, in troduced the managers and then awarded Jason Warren a ten speed bike for his out standing participation in the recent money making project Also benefiting from this ac tivity were Mrs. Spranger olg Wisconsin, R.L. Ruzicka and T. Wicklund. In an impressive ceremony, the four major league baseball teams playing in the opening games stood along the baselines, while the national anthem was played. Spectators agreed that this was a beautiful and touching moment. First balls were thrown out by Rev. Richard Wright, pastor of the Wonder Lake Bible church and Rev. D.E. Tranel, " pastor of Christ the King church, to catchers, Dan Huff of the Tigers, Chris Misiak of the Indians, Dan Crook of the Yankees and John Raber of the White Sox. In an overtime seven inning game, the Tigers beat the In dians 6-5. Another exciting game found the White Sox victorious over the Yankees 8-5. Assisting President Kiernan with the Wonder Lake boys baseball are Russ Carr, treasurer; Gary Spranger, secretary; Len Spencer, equipment manager; Don Crook, charge of umpires; Ron Vance, ball fields. Major league managers are Gary Spiering, Tigers; Dale Buss, White Sox; Don Crook, Yankees; Tom Misiak, Indians, Rich Gonzales, Angels. ANNIVERSARY Happy twenty-ninth wedding anniversary to George and Gloria Freund June 12. CELEBRATION Nativity Lutheran twenty- fifth anniversary celebration is planned for Aug. 28! The committees are planned and working! REMEMBER WHEN ... Remember when .in Wonder Lake...you could walk out of your home on a warm summer evening, confidently leaving the doors and windows open and walk down to Jerry's with blankets and lawn chairs, where a movie screen was strung between two piers and you could watch an "exciting" movie such as "The Three Musketeers" and sip some of the liquid libation offered on the lower level of the place. Remember when...the Gaye Wend beauty shop was Ronny Perry's dress shop and before that, Jim Robison's grocery and before that, Wally Dean's market. Remember when... Wonder Lake had a Rod and Gun club. Remember when...an ice truck drove the streets of Wonder Lake and stopped at houses with the sign in the window showing how many pounds the ice box needed and the kids all ran along side for those deliciously refreshing ice chips. Remember when...there were carnivals at Christ the King church. Remember when....some homes in Wonder Lake had water pumps in the yard and you had to carry water to the house to flush the toilets and remember to save some water to prime the pump. Do you "remember when" in Wonder Lake. Give a call. We'd like to hear. HAPPINESS IS... Happiness is... the Wonder Lake Garden club, doing the community a service by planting pretty flowers all around the post office. Happiness is...Wonder Lake friends asking "what hap pened" when we miss writing one of our weekly columns. "What happened" is you didn't call in with your news! Happiness is...congratulating Clare Higgins, one of the top ten graduates of McHenry high school. Happiness is...eight year old Bobby Wagner, making a double play in his first practice Little League game. Happiness is...Larry and Sharon Goulet, having a graduation celebration for their son, Kevin, honoring his eighth grade graduation from McHenry Junior high school. Happiness is...watching the Memorial day parade spon sored by the American Legion and stopping with the kids at the Legion hall afterwards for free ice cream. . _ Happiness is. . .congratulating Richard Goc and Mary O'Donnell, winners of this year's Woman's club of Wonder L a k e s c h o l a r s h i p s . Happiness is...Ron and Nancy Parquette, putting together a Memorial day get- together for the neighbors with all the necessary ingredients; a barrel, barbecue, baseball and a liberal dose of Gemutlichkeit. Happiness is ..not repeating the comments of the Little League's "moms" overheard at the games. Happiness is...congratulating three outstanding Harrison school graduates who spoke at their graduation exercises May 25, about "The Past", George Hartmann; "The Present, Steve Brinkmann; and "The Future", Mary Lance. Happiness is...trying to set right with the world what we find wrong, with it, instead of complaining about it. H a p p i n e s s i s . . . o - n - 1 - y seventy-nine days 'till school starts! Together we assembled candy favors for residents of Valley Hi nursing home for Mother's day. It's always a meeting we especially enjoy doing, no matter how small our contribution. The business meeting followed conducted by our president, Mrs. Helen Gilliland and our roll call subject was "Your Favorite Blooming Bushes". The next meeting will be held at Mrs. Bobbi Fiali's home June 10 at 8 in the evening at 1012 Ridge road. l Again, we cordially invite anyone in terested in gardening to join us. B.
