One of the most enjoyable dinners of the season was en joyed by a number of the contractors and building ex perts in this vicinity on Friday, May 27, at Niesen's cafe when Floyd E. Covalt of the McHenry Lumber company acted as host on behalf of the Johns Man- sville company manufacturers of fireproof asbestos shingles McHenry people are invited to visit the Riverside Palace, one of the most beautiful ballrooms in northern Illinois, which is now open for the summer season The Palace is located half a mile north of Burtons bridge It can be reached from McHenry by driving two miles south on • Elgin road, and then one mile east. The building itself is very pleasantly done in Spanish stucco, while a peppy orchestra furnishes the music for dancing every Saturday night. Peter J. Schaefer has recently installed a new modern Frigidaire refrigerator in his meat market on Main street. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 10. 1937) Nearly two hundred people enjoyed a dinner and dance at the new Riverside hotel Tuesday evening, marking Charter night for McHenry s newly organized Lions club. Joining the two sponsoring clubs, Elgin and Woodstock, were enthusiastic groups from Crystal Lake. Lake Geneva. Liberty ville, Palatine, Barrington. Fox Lake and Lombard. C.H. Duker is the capable president of the club. Mayor R.I. Overton presided at the June meeting of the City- Council held at the city hail Monday evening, when the usual reports were read and other routine business attended to. The meeting was a rather lengthy one with several topics under discussion, among them being the discussion of stop signs at the various dangerous corners in McHenry. A lease was drawn up by the city attorney. Vernon Knox, leasing the parking space across from the Empire theatre from the Green Street Business Men's association for the sum of one dollar. The city will pay for a limited number of lights and the association will pay for other upkeep. It was decided to investigate the advisability of purchasing propery for parking purposes. Raymond Hughes, who is employed by the American Telephone and Telegraph company at clerical work, has been transferred from Dan ville, 111., to Rockford, la. He stopped here enroute to Iowa, to visit his parents, Mr. and M s. Frank Hughes. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 19, 1952) Anyone residing in the McHenry community who heretofore held little faith in superstitions surrounding Friday, the thirteenth, found their firm beliefs wavering last week. Even the old timers had difficulty recalling a storm which brought such sudden and complete darkness to the community as that which en veloped McHenry and the surrounding area early Friday afternoon. Within minutes the heavy, dark clouds seemed to come nearer to the earth as business houses continued to serve the usual Friday crowd in stores which were lighted fully as much as one might expect at the height of the evening hour A record number of voters are expected to go to the polls next November in the presidential election and plans are already going forward in anticipation of this voting Two registration days will be held throughout the county, the first on Sept 20 and the second Oct. 7 Prior to those dates. registration will be handled any time at the county clerk's office in Woodstock The Shamrocks fought back like the "Micks" of old last Thursday evening as they came from behind to beat the Woodstock nine. 4 to 3 in the first game of the district tournament being staged at the V F W grounds With Joe Jackson on the mound the Johnsburg Tigers defeated the classy Great lakes nine on the sailors' diamond Going into the ninth with a 3-3 tie. Charlie Hiller walloped a home run to give his team the victory edge. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 15, 1967) The McHenry Chamber of Commerce, in paying tribute to fathers on their special day in June, is offering gift cer tificates to the lucky dads chosen by chance this Satur day. June 17. First prize is a $25 gift certificate, second, $15 and third, 10. ' Rev. John Mclntyre received the keys to the attractive new church from Earl H. Murray, chairman, of Faith Presbyterian church. It was one of the impressive portions of the ceremony which marked dedication and consecration of the new building last Sunday. The church is located at the corner of Lincoln and Chapel Hill roads. A Milwaukee man of 57 went berserk in the Riverside hotel last Monday night and threw a couch and end table through a picture window. He was arrested by McHenry police and charged with criminal damage to property. Steven Gray had been put off the Greyhound bus in McHenry for creating a nuisance, and authorities took him to the hotel to stay for the night. Sometime later the damage occurred. Pat Long, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Long, will receive his Eagle Scout award Saturday evening, June 17, when an outdoor court of honor is held in the wooded area near the Legion grounds. Coffee Crop The 1976-77 crop is estimated at 60.5 million bags, down 16 per cent from the previous crop and the smallest since 1970-71 Cathorlno Nolan Tag Chairman For Doughnut Day -> Mrs. Catherine B. Nolan, 2315 Club drive, McHenry, will serve as chairman for the Salvation Army's Doughnut day Friday, June 10, in McHenry. She has served as chairman for the past three years. Tne McHnery Business and Professional Women's club has adopted Doughnut day as an official club project. Over 8,000 volunteers will sell familiar paper doughnut tags on sL'33., corners in Chicagoand 135 suburban communities in the surrounding seven-county area. The income goal for the 1977 Doughnut day is $200,000. The funds will help benefit more than 1,500,000 men, women and children in the area who will be helped during 1977 through the social welfare services provided by the Salvation Army.
