Warn Reye's Syndrome Follows Viral Illness Reye's Syndrome is a serious illness that often is fatal to children. It usually follows shortly after a viral illness, such as flu or chicken pox. Of the thousands of children that come down with the flu each winter, only a few, statistically, will develop Reye's Syndrome. But for those few it will be very serious. Usually the child will have completely recovered from the first illness and be back in School or af play before, the symptoms of Reye's appear. Sudden, persistent vomiting is almost always the first sign, followed closely by complaints of fatigue, general listlessness and apathy. If a child shows these symp toms, contact a doctor im mediately. Mental disorien tation occurs soon after the vomiting ceases. The child may become totally irrational ~ screaming, striking out, and unable to recognize family members and other familiar faces. Unconsciousness soon follows. Reye's Syndrome is not always.fatal. Sixty oer££nt of children affected in a 1974 epidemic recovered com pletely, and doctors now are guided by lessons learned during that outbreak. The idea of the program is to develop students' ability to read silently and to learn to read without interruption for a relatively long time. Each individual chooses a book or other reading material and reads silently without in terruption for 35 minutes. All Read -- Students And Staff Not only do students read during this time period, but the adults present in the classroom also read. East campus prin cipal, Gary Fields, has said, "Although there were some problems from a small number of students who are reluctant readers, SQUIRT has been well received. Plans are to continue the Super Quiet Uninterrupted Individual Reading Time ac tivity next year." The time for SQUIRT is gained by shor tening classes by six minutes for the reaminder of the day each Monday. San Francisco area where he will become familiarized with the four-engine submarine search plane. For the next three years, he will pilot the plane over the Pacific ocean during cruise expeditions. Since SQUIRT takes time away from other parts of the school program, it must be considered as a part of the entire educational program., Reading is something that we all must know how to do. It is the thought of the staff at East campus that SQUIRT is a good way to help all students read Reading is a skill and all skills need practice. SQUIRT is.the practice of reading. Hopefully, through SQUIRT, a significant number of students will develop positive reading habits. Loan Program Receives Government Assistance In a move designed to in crease on-farm storage and drying facilities, Secretary of Agriculture Bob Bergland has relaxed requirements and expanded government assistance under the farm facility loan program. According to Jim Lucas, county executive director, McHenry county ASCS office, several changes in the program should allow more McHenry county farmers to participate in the program and to build larger storage facilities than before. Under the new program, a farmer can borrow up to $50,000 on two years' crops with 15 percent down and 7 percent interest. The maximum loan amount under the old program was $25,000 on one year's crop with 30 percent down and 74 percent interest. In addition, the cost of cement and electrical wiring, formerly excluded, is now eligible under the program. "Any owner, landlord, tenant or sharecropper may be eligible if they meet the county ASC committee s conditions,' Lucas said. They must grow one or more of the following crops: corn, barley, sorghum, wheat, rye, or soybeans. For more information about government farm facility loans, contact the McHenry county ASCS office or a member of the county ASC committee.
