Box 205 • Crysul Lake, Illinois 60014 • (815)459-2641 by Estelle Atwell It looks like a hot summer. And a hotter than usual spring prepares us for what is ahead. Your pets may already have felt reactions to the heat. Do all you can to keep them com fortable and healthy through the season. A parked car on a hot sum mer day is a death trap for your pet. A small dog can die in ten minutes time under these conditions. And remember, too, that if the car is parked in a sunny spot even on relatively cool summer days, it still heats up unbearably. Heat prostration is a cruel death and can cause permanent damage to those lucky enough to sur vive. When the weather is hot it's best to leave your pet at home in the shade or in a cool shuttered house with plenty of fresh drinking water. You invite problems and discomfort for the animal by leaving him in an Unventilated garage or other enclosure for any length of time. Kennels should have adequate ven tilation to provide good air circulation for dogs in summer months. When dogs are out doors, shade and ample fresh drinking water should be provided. Avoid excessive exercise. The treatment for heat prostration is to gradually immerse the dog in cool water if possible. Or use a gentle spray of cold water from a garden hose. Apply ice packs to the head and neck. Do all of this promptly and then take your pet to a veterinarian as soon as possible. Besides bringing hot weather, summer introduces various outdoor events and activities. On Saturday, June 18, the first of several fund raising efforts for Helping Paws is scheduled in McHenry. It will be a tag day and naturally the more taggers, the more funds raised. So if you are a friend of animals and can spare a few hours time on that day, please call Betty Van- Dev'enter at 459-6454 for an assignment. Helping Paws maintains an office open Monday-Saturday from 10 to 2, phone 459-2641.
