SUPPLEMENT TO McHENRY PLAINDEALER -PAGE 4 -FRIDAY. JUNE 10, 1977 Old world grace returns to grand San Francisco hotel SanFrancisco -- Tony Bennett left his heart here. Willie Mays hit home runs here. And Princess Hotels International restored this city's leading hotel to .its original grandeur. While Tony Bennett and Willie Mays are gone, the Sir Francis Drake has become the tourist mecca of this ro mantic bay city. Cable car at door The cable car to Fisher man's Wharf stops at the Drake's door, and busy Union Square, heart of the downtown shopping district, is just a block away. But the Sir Francis Drake, unlike other San Francisco hotels, has its own drawing power. The 21-story establish ment joined the San Fran cisco skyline in 1928, but had lost its original elegance by the time Princess Hotels acquired the property in 1970. A multi-million dollar facelifting restored the grace of the '20s and returned the Drake to the top rank among the city's hotels. The 21st-floor Starlite Roof, offering a 360-degree view of the City of Hills, has been winning accolades for years. The view from the roof is spectacular at any hour, but especially memorable at night, as the dancing lights of the city shine below. The plush dining facility offers a daily luncheon buf fet with an extensive, but inexpensive, variety of fare, but the best-known daylight attraction is the English brunch buffet each Sunday. After dark, the Starlite Roof serves free hors d'oeu- vres during the cocktail hour and provides music for danc ing from 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Another popular place to dine at the Drake is Drake's Tavern, where cozy Tudor decor enhances a menu fea turing such British bounty as prime ribs of beef with Yorkshire pudding, steak and kidney pie, London mixed grill, and -- for des sert -- English sherry trifle. Continental dishes in the French tradition are other favorites. A third dining experience is available at the medieval- themed Carving Board, the Drake's newest restaurant. Hanging banners, coats-of- arms, shields and mounted weaponry surround diners eating beef, lamb, ham, and turkey roasts. Waitresses wear "Moll Flanders" attire while wandering minstrels entertain. Legendary roller* One of the strollers is Sir Francis Drake himself. The legendary sea captain, choosing to make San Fran cisco his permanent base, kisses hands, doffs a plumed hat, and occasionally tells tales of high adventure. By day, the Carving Board becomes the cheerful Plate of Brasse Coffee Shoppe where residents and visitors enjoy informal meals. At tea time each after noon, guests are offered an assortment of English scones, Scotch shortbread, homemade bread and jam, finger sandwiches, and eight different teas. Bugle call In keeping with the hotel's British tradition, tea time is announced with a ceremon ial bugle call in the lobby. In addition to the culinary attractions, handsome ac commodations, and prime location, the Sir Francis Drake features 10 meeting rooms that can accommo date groups of 16 to 500 per sons. The largest, The Em pire Room, seats 500 in theater style or 300 for a banquet. Both vacation and con vention guests enjoy not only proximity to the Bay City's » myriad of attractions, but also special activities inside the hotel. These include Saturday afternoon choral concerts as well as exhibits from a French bread bakery, the Sierra Club, the San Fran cisco Architectural Heritage Foundation, and the city's Wine Museum. Travelers considering the Drake as their home away from home can take advan tage of several package plans, available through Aug. For further information, see your travel agent.
