" ' * * - 4 I rest and recreation paradise For the majority of Amer icans, most of the year is devoted to busy workiijg' hours and concentration on school and study. When there is time for recreation, they find themselves involved in a variety of indoor acti vities. Ready for change Before too long, many of us are ready for a change -- for a vacation. We want sun, excitement and most of all -- an outlet for all our pent- up energy. The beautiful island of Puerto Rico offers us this outlet With its year-round summertime, its vast natural facilities and its magnificent hotels equipped with every modern convenience, it is a sports and recreation para dise for singles and families, for the active set and for spectators. Every sport Almost every type of sport is represented in Puerto Rico: From fishing to tennis, from golf to horse racing. Swimming and Surfing. Puerto Rico offers the year- round pleasure of these two sports. Swimming can be en joyed in a variety of settings --at the gleaming beaches or at luxurious pools, at a secluded cove or at one of the 12 public beaches where lockers, showers and parking are provided at nominal rates. Best beaches For those who prefer surf ing to sunning and splashing, excellent surfing beaches are found along the island's north and west coasts. Deepsea Fishing, Sailing and Boating. Puerto Rico is a topnotch area for fishing thanks to its mild climate and abundance of large fish. More than 30 world rec ords have been broken in island waters where blue and white marlin, sailfish, wahoo, tuna, mackerel, arid numer ous other fish present an ex citing challenge. Throughout the island -- at hotels, marinas and yacht clubs -- visitors can rent sail and motor boats. Also, snorkeling, scuba and water- skiing equipment and in struction are available. Golf. Five resort hotels in Puerto Rico have beautifully landscaped championship golf courses: Palmas del Mar in Humacao; the Cer- romar and Dorado Beach in Dorado; Hyatt Rio Mar in Rio Grande; and El Con quistador in Fajardo. Courts and greens The course at Berwind Country Club in Rio Grande II - FRIDAY, JUNE 10, 1977 is open to the public Tues day through Friday. At Punta Borinquen in Aquadilla, a new moderately- priced resort complex, has an 18-hole public golf course with clubhouse, lounges, cafeteria, proshop and club rentals. Open daily, green fees are $5 on weekdays and $7 on weekends. There are several other public courses and country club courses scattered throughout the island. Golf lessons are available from professionals everywhere. Tennis. In Metropolitan San Juan there are seven hotels with tennis courts. Out on the island, there are*?*#" courts at hotels and small inns. Instruction and tennis clinics are available at most court locations. For tourists who enjoy watching sports rather than participating in them, Puerto Rico offers: Great thoroughbreds Racing. The island boasts El Comandante Race Track, one of the hemi sphere's most beautiful tracks where great thorough breds and outstanding jock eys compete Wednesday, Fri day, Sunday and holidays the year round. Admission to the Club House is $2.50; to the grandstand is $.75. For further information on sports and all the other attractions Puerto Rico has to offer, call V5.jr travel agent or contact the Com monwealth of Puerto Rico Tourism Development Com pany, 1290 Avenue of the Americas, New York, New York 10019. Lunkers One of the likely places to take a nasty spill during a fishing trip is on a slippery deck while getting into or out of a boat. Make sure the shoe you wear has a good a n t i - s k i d s o l e , i s l i g h t weight, and dries fast. This one, called Lunkers, has all this plus a snug vinyl collar at the ankle.
