SUPPLEMENT TO McHENRY PLAINCEALER- PAGE 12 -FRIDAY, JUNE 10, 1977 Take proper view of Great Outdoors. and be protected from glare, sun Season's spice There's more to sun glasses than meets the eye. Whether you're a weekend hiker or a wilderness trail blazer, you'll find a wide choice of sunglasses for the protection you'll need in the Great Outdoors. Here's what the vision experts at Bausch & Lomb have to say about glare and eye protection. As a rule of thumb, your sunglasses should block at least 70% of the light. For the beach or other high- glare situations, however, glasses that block 80% of the sun's rays are suggest ed. In either case, sage green and neutral gray are the best colors for sun glass lenses because they won't affect color percep tion. Special needs Also, you may be inter ested in glasses for special outdoor needs. Chances are that a good pair of sunglasses with 80% absorption will be more than adequate for the toughest glare condi tions you'll encounter. But if you would like a pair of sunglasses designed speci fically for water and snow sports, look for a pair with gradient mirror lenses. These sunglass lenses are coated at the top and bottom with a thin layer of stainless steel. The coating provides an extra buffer against overhead and water-reflected glare and also invisible infrared (heat) and ultraviolet (sunburn) rays. For shooting, hunting, Generally, good quality sunglasses are aceeptable for most outdoor activities. However, there are specialized glasses for particular outdoor needs -- flying, shooting, fishing or boating, l-ook for glasses with optical quality lenses and well-fitting frames such as these by Bausch & Lomb. boating or skiing, glasses, with Kalichrome lenses are recommended. Kali- chrome is a yellow glass specifically designed for this purpose. By filtering out blue light, these shoot ers' glasses increase con trast on hazy mornings or foggy days and make a target easy to spot. How ever, they should not be worn to reduce glare on a sunny day. For pilots If you're up in the air -- flying your own plane that is -- there is a special sun glass for you. SLEEK AND SASSY, this outfit shows a two-button jacket with flapped lower pockets. The fabric of the jacket is a multi-colored stubbed broken plaid pattern on a mango background. It has a solid color mango gun patch yoke and a wide vertical panel down the right side. The slacks, with Western-style pockets, are in the same solid color mango. Tent trailer provides portable hunting lodge Whether you know it as a tent trailer, pop-up or camping trailer, mod ern hunters are taking more of them into the field where these highly portable campers provide warm, dry, above-the- ground living quarters. The camping trailer is not a new idea, but new design techniques and lightweight materials make it one of the most practical concepts in port able housing. t Generically, the unit is a single-axle trailer with box that erects into a tent that can sleep from two to eight people. The trailer becomes the floor of the shelter, keeping the camp ers up and off the ground. Floor plans Most versions of the camping trailer have a solid aluminum roof and two large double beds that slide out to form com modious sleeping "wings" at each end of the unit. A typical floor plan in cludes a dinette which makes up0 into a double bed, and a galley that provides sink, gas range, ice box or LP. gas refrig erator. Other popular amenities are privacy curtains for the sleeping areas, a pow er converter that permits running the unit's DC ap pliances off a conventional AC line, a crank system so the camper can be set up and taken down at the turn of a handle, a port able toilet, and a host of other conveniences. Of course the option that makes the camping trailer a hit with the deer hunters, bird hunters, and early spring fishermen, is a built-in gas furnace. These L.P. heaters warm up the tent quickly, and keep it that way for pennies. Stays dry And while other canvas shelters always seem damp, the camping trailer stays dry since ventilating air can move below and around the entire unit. For, many outdoorsmen the primary advantage of the camping trailer is its "towability." Since the camper collapses to a height below that of the average tow vehicle, wind resistance and sway are not the problems they can be with larger trailers. What is more, the lower profile and light weight keep gas consumption to a minimum. Good storage A hunter can stow a large amount of gear in his camping trailer. The better units are designed with all kinds of cup boards, nooks and cran nies for belongings, plus the trailer bed itself usual ly provides several cubic feet of storage space even when the tent is folded down. Many models offer clever wardrobe closets that keep clothes on hang ers during transit. In most units there is access to storage areas without having to raise the tent. Hence, a hunter can pack his camping trailer once at the begin ning of the season, and leave it packed and ready to go at a moment's notice. Versatile The versatility of the camping trailer is not the private domain of the hunter and angler. Young couples and budget-mind ed families find that these recreational vehicles give maximum camping fun for the dollar. Typically, camping trail ers are available in 14- foot through 20-foot lengths (measured with slide-out beds extended). Prices put the trailer at the economy end of the camping spectrum. Coach men Industries, for exam ple, offers its 14-foot Sun Puppy for around $1,000, and its larger, more elab orate Sun Classic for ap proximately $2,500. Whether you are an active hunter who is tired of sleeping on the ground, or an active family look ing for a carefree camping vehicle at a modest price, the camping trailer may be just what you need.
