JUNE 10. 1977 EARL WALSH %••• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR On Tuesday afternoon Jack Brickhouse announced that Joe Wagner and his bride of 33 years were attending the ball game in Wrigley Field. Nice of the Cubs to give them a 10 to 4 victory over the Dodgers for a wedding present Saw a license plate on a car that read - MAN 45. Suppose he will have to change this to 46 next year. That's where one of the fairer sex could be a winner. She could get number Ms. 39 and keep it for years. Mary Pinkstaff and her husband. Jim, attend local Pigtail League games five nights each week. That's what you call supporting our young people. The Cubs and Sox are making believers out of a lot of experts who didn't give them much chance last spring. Both teams have players who can whack the ball around the lot. While our loyalty to the Sox • has remained constant for years, it was a bit disturbing when it took a base on balls, an error and a wild pitch to get a run across the plate Before this hits the press, we expect to be attending a preview part for "The Great American Horse Show". Bet they don't ride em bareback like they did in our day. Will tell you all about it. What's this? It's a cartoon clipping that got buried under some papers. Men and women are gathered around a gambling table and one remarks, "I tried farming once, but it was too risky". It was Jim Curran who slipped us that one. Never knew that a Children's Day has been designated. It is June 12. Father's Day is June 19. Dog Days begin July 3. What a surprise! Mayor Bilandic won in a landslide. When I mentioned the Democratic machine, a friend offered a correction. He claims the opposition wants to build up the same thing, but call it an organization. Machine is a dirty word. L A rose by any other name -- Northwestern University's Andy Oakley, a freshman from McHenry, battles it out with three Iowa University two-milers during a Big Ten dual meet at Northwestern. Crystal Lake's Bill Santino (left), a junior at Iowa, managed to pull away from Oakley with less than a half-mile remaining. Santino won the race with a personal best of t:i7. Oakley placed second with a clocking of 9:17. Both runners ran fast enough to advance to the Big Ten Championships at Indiana University in Bloomington. A Big Swing ... but this young player of the Mini league Pirates fails to connect and becomes a strike-out victim during Tuesday's game against the Giants at the VFW park. A large audience of parents watched the Pirates lose their first game of the season by a close 3-2 score. The Giants improved their record to 5-2, and are now one game behind the Pirates in the Mini division of the McHenry Youth league. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Plans Developing For Farm Sports Festival Action on several fronts is shaping up for McHenry county Farm bureau members and others eligible to participate in the Illinois Farm Sports festival. Among sports scheduled are tennis, Softball, golf, trap shooting, swimming, and diving. Larry Harris, Farm bureau executive secretary, said the immediate deadline for par ticipation that members should be concerned with is for a place on the roster of a Softball team. Farm bureau is sponsoring six Softball teams this year. If a Farm bureau or 4-H member would like to take part, he should contact Harris at the Farm bureau smce rosters must be completed and mailed to the Illinois Agricultural association next week. The teams inlcude: Young Adult, managed by Jim Clary; All-County, managed by Charles Lockinger; 35'ers, managed by Bill Lagerhausen; Slow Pitch, managed by Gary Miller; and Boys' and Girls' 4- H teams, organized by Dave Plocher and Kathi Heberer. Jim Keefe, county Sports Festival chairman, said dates have been established for district competition. Some county tourneys to determine entries will be held. The district golf tourney will be July 18. The district Softball tourney will be at DeKalb on July 27. Joe Gitlin is organizing the county's swimming and diving entries, probably with a county meet beforehand. Tennis players will go direct to the state tourney but must register by July 28 • McHenry Area I I 12-Inch Softball I DIVOT DOLLS M.C.C. Using the three best low net balls out of four, Betty Phalen's team registered 212 to take the lead in the first week of the two- week Calcutta event for the ladies of McHenry Country club. On Betty's team were Dorothy Freund, Betty Rode and Carol Bolger. Captained by Carol Cooney, the second-lead team of Evie Guntner, Mabel Smith and Bea Gossell scored 213. Third leading team with 214 was captained by Letty Busscher whose teammates were Sue Martin, Barbara Leight and Betty Smith. With a whole string of teams following with scores from 214 to 218 the \ race is close and next week's culmination of this event could upset these standings and change leaders to followers. Time will tell. Shooting a 41-46 for an 87 gross, Carol Cooney took low net of 70 in Class A. In Class B Evie Guntner had low net of 72, while Carolyn Harger in Class C had net 63 and Carolyn Boyer in Class D netted 78. Low putts of the day were 28, rolled in by Mil Leisten. Four birdies were shot of No. 14 with one being shot of No. 16. On No. 14 the birds were by Nell Fidler, Maddi^ Holmes, Barb Weber and Jean Napier. On No. 16 the bird was shot by Carol Seese. Various chip-in were reported. Nancy Wilkins had one on No. 17, as did Mitzi Kenton on No. 12, Betty Smith on No. 10 and Fran Herrmann on No. 4. Fran's was especially pretty since she had to fly over the sandtrap to drop her ball in the cup. Just to prove that the game isn't over 'til the ball is in the cup, Laverne Harpling put her drive out of bounds on No. 18 but recovered sufficiently to score a bogie on the hole. That lass remains cool under all conditions. Next week will bring the wind-up of the Calcutta event with the week after finding the ladies all trying to Beat the Champ. 'Til then. Happy Golfing!
