I see a lot of tense people and I wonder if they are iust drivingthem- selves towtffd cancer." ANSWERline: The question of personality and the development of cancer is in triguing. but there is little evidence of a connection. There is one emotional aspect to the cancer problem, however, that is worth mentioning: some people might be so frightened of cancer that they might ignore or delay a cancer warning signal or delay before seeing a physician Since early detection and prompt treat ment are the only way to deal with cancer, this kind of fear can cost lives. Thus, while we still have to determine if emotions influence cancer, we already know the importance of emotions about cancer A woman writes: "My elderly aunt recently had to have a breast removed because McHENRY STORE ONLY 4400 W. The ACS can arrange for a woman who has had a mastectomy to visit your aunt, and if your aunt is able to read braille, she will be happy to know that there are brailie versions of just the information she might need about exercise, hand and arm care, and wardrobe ad justments. The braille Reach to Recovery materials are available either through local ACS units, or The Jewish Guild for the Blind, 15 West 65th Street. New York, New York 10023. A high school student asks: "Is cancer the number one disease killer in our country?" ANSWERline: No That dubious distinction belongs to heart disease, which will claim over 750,000 American lives this year. Cancer is in second place, causing some 350.000 deaths in 1976. Stroke, accidents, in fluenza and pneumonia come next. It might interest you to know that the cancer death toll would be going down if our nation weren't experiencing an epidemic of lung cancer, a disease that could be almost completely eradicated if cigarette smoking were eliminated. Cigarette smoking also figures prominently in death from heart disease and stroke. Audiences are seated in a special portable grandstand, seating 400 people, on the south mall of the Old State Capitol plaza in downtown Springfield. "More than 41,000 people attended 'Sound and Light at the Old State Capitol' during the 69-night season last year," Alderfer said (one night's showing was cancelled by rain). "An audience survey taken during the last two weeks of the. 1976 season indicated strong public support for continued presentation of the show for years to come." A b r a h a m L i n c o l n ' s association with the Old Capitol, his political development, and his approach to the issues that precipitated the Civil War are dramatized by the multi-media electronic production. The story is contained on a one-inch eight-track magnetic tape. 3.400 feet long, moving at 15 feet per second. The tape plays voices, music, and sound effects over eleven strategically placed high fidelity speakers and simultaneously activates more than 160 lighting fixtures to pre- coded color and intensity levels.
