Krista Kaefer, Tom Nu-Voice Members At Cancer Visitors' Day Seven members of the Nu- Voice club of McHenry county, a club for laryngectomees and their families, recently att- neded a laryngectomee visitors' day, sponsored by the American Cancer society, Illinois Division, Inc. at Henrici's Clock Tower Inn, Rockford. This meeting was a refresher day for laryngec tomee visitors - those rehabilitated laryngectomees who, under the supervision of the surgeon, are requested to visit the patient who is ex periencing the adjustment to laryngectomy. This operation, surgical removal of the vocal cords, is the result of cancer of the larynx or trauma to the larynx. The day-long meeting in Rock- ford offered the group the opportunity to take part in a skill session on visiting, and to ask questions and compare notes with others in the Laryngectomee Rehabilitation program. A new first aid film, "Three Critical Minutes", was shown as part of the program, and is available from the Cancer society on a loan basis. This film concerns appropriate live- saving techniques for the laryngectomee. The Rockford Nu-Voice club has extended an invitation to the Nu-Voice club of McHenry county to attend its summer picnic Sunday, Aug. 14, at Atwood park in Rockford from noon to 4 p.m. It is hoped that these two groups can take an active interest in one another's r e s p e c t i v e a c t i v i t i e s throughout the months to come. NOT "MINOR" AT ALL They're not to be taken too seriously, the minor league baseball games. It is a time for learning, a time for making mistakes, a time for losing and sometimes, a time for winning. It's a time for laughing and a time for crying. It's a time to find out about sportsmanship and how to be a "team". It's a time for parents to hold back that protective instinct a bit when their "baby" gets hit with a pitched ball and goes to first base rubbing where it hurts. It's a time for parents to share the disappointment when he strikes out (that's three-you don't get another one-sit down!) It's a time when parents "bust their buttons" when he finally hits that first "homer". It's a time when a parent is glad he's sitting there on the sidelines when the batter steals a glance over there, just to be sure you're watching. It's an important time. REMEMBER WHEN... Remember when..in Wonder Lake..the post office was in the drug store, which is now Communications Unlimited, and Art Hay was postmaster and the "soda jerks" were teenagers, Anne Lundborg and Bob Cormier and next door was Reuter's store. v Remember when...Schimke's oil truck used to deliver oil to homes before o&r gas line went through. Remember when...there were one armed bandits in the grocery store. Remember when..a silver colored bus made regular trips to Woodstock and the fare was 25 cents. Remember when...Mary Ruggero only had three kids! Remember when...Jim LaGreca and his dad, Art, were bartenders (Art was the owner) at LaGreca's and Jim and his buddies would go hunting every year and bring back the game and his mom, Edna, would cook up a moose dinner for the public. Other times she served a good fish fry on a Friday, with a tasty clam chowder to begin with. And some evenings, Barb Fiala would entertain by singing her classic, "A Good Man Nowadays is Hard to Find". Remember when... Parkers had their Ice Cream Parlor. Do you remember when in Wonder Lake. Give a call. We'd like to hear. HAPPINESS IS.f , Happiness is...camping out in the back yard. Happiness is...blue forget me nots in a vase. Happiness is...helping mom by shelling fresh peas from the garden and ending up with more peas in the tummy than in the bowl.. Happiness is...hugging your child, they're never too old! Happiness is...wishing all the dads a Happy Fathers day with special wishes to Papa Joe Berner and our kids' daddy, Don Huff.
