How are social security credits earned, and how much work would a person reaching age 62 this year need in order to receive benefits? A. For most jobs, a person gets credit for a quarter year of work if he is paid $50 or more during a 3-month calendar quarter. A person retiring at age 62 in 1977 needs 26 quarters of 6Mt years of work. These credits or quarters of coverage can also be earned if a person is self-employed and has net earnings in a year of $400 or more from covered self- employment. Q. What does Medicare pay towards hospital care as In inpatient? A. Medicare hospital in­ surance will pay for all covered inpatient hospital service except for the first $124. Medicare covers the first 60 days and all but $31 a day for the next 30 days of care, if needed. Beyond that, a person has 60 lifetime reserve (toys to draw on if the illness requires hospitalization for more than 90 days. If the reserve days are used, Medicare pays all but $62 a day towards this care.
