Research Celling Insulation Program For 1,000 Seniors Northern Illinois Gas has received permission from the Illinois Commerce commission to research a residential ceiling insulation program at no charge for about 1,000 senior citizens who meet established criteria. NI-Gas is initiating this study to underscore its commitment to conservation while also helping those who have been most affected by inflation and increased energy costs. What they do is not spec­ tacular. But they do it with grace. If you have hiked the Ap­ palachian trail where it begins near Vogel State park, you might know the Sims. The trail passes within inches of their living room door. Across the path, under the same roof, is the craft shop and haven for hikers which they run for the State Parks Service. Jim Sims had to put a sign on their door, "Ranper's home." He did it because hikers who would occasionally blunder in were embarrassed at finding they were in someone's home. The Sims didn't mind. In fact, they take a warm interest in wayfarers. "We get ^wonderful letters from people who've stopped by off the trail," says Mr. Sims. "A lot of times it was just that we'd dried their clothes for them in our clothes drier." J The couple, in their mid- fifties, used to spend summers in a cabin in the park. When Jim Sims retired from government service, they settled in their present role. They took on a mission - to be ready to help people coming through - in any way, even with spiritual support. They have two Bibles opened on a table in the hikers' lodge. "A lot of them are searching for something," says Jim Sims. "They're confused and don't know what they're looking for. They come out here to meditate and become closer to God." And if they waitf to talk about it, their hosts will listen.
