Baking Bread? *p a hard crust from July Issued To Pet Owners f For many pets the Fourth of July is anything but "Am". The loud bursts and bright ex- of fireworks can be terrifying to cats and dogs. The Humane Society of the United States warns pet owners to take extra precautions to safeguard* their pets during this year's celebrations. In their efforts to find a safe haven from die noise and confusion of fireworks, pets will often chew through ropes, jump fences, and run away. There have even been cases of dogs breaking car windows to escape frightening noises. In McHenry county alone, the Animal Control center lacked up twenty-nine run-away, frightened dogs last July Fourth holiday. , The HSUS recommends that pets be left home, secure inside a house or garage. Owners of normally nervous pets should consider checking with a veterinarian for tranqtdlizing of the pet during this holiday. Private kenneling may be considered as an alternative to tranquilization of nervous pets. Pets should not be allowed to run at large, especially on the Fourth. Every year, hundreds of pets suffer at the hands of cruel persons who obtain fireworks and attach them to resulting in serious in- f or death to the animals. According to Phil Steward, investigator for the HSUS, "Each year, thousands of pets turn up in the nation's animal shelters suffering from injuries because owners failed to take extra precautions for their protection. Many pets are so frightened by the noise and explosions that they ran blindly into busy streets and are often critically injured." Steward also pointed out that humane societies and animal control departments across the nation often beef up their forces in an effort to meet the tremendous increase in calls for loose pets and injury cases on the Fourth of July. Emergency veterinary hospitals also report increases in injured animal treatment during the<Fourth celebrations.
