Three men were seriously injured Wednesday afternoon when the McHenry fire truck crashed into the railing on the side of the Fox River bridge, just escaping a plunge into the waiter below, in answer to the flrfe alarm turned in about 5:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon the truck manned by three of the members of the fire department, Louis St off el, William and Carl Bickler, was being hurried to the scene of Uie fire across the river. Lewis Stoffel and William Bickler both suffered bad compound fractures of the arm. The condition of Carl Bickler ap- peared to be the most serious as he remained unconscious and did not respond to medical treatment, making it im­ possible to determine the nature of his injuries. The fourth of July was celebrated in the usual style in McHenry and vicinity with thousands of visitors spending the hpnlays in this city and alongu|eFox River and lakes. Many special trains on the Chiclkgo and Northwestern railr&Ml brought many visiotrs here to spend the three-day vacationx in Addition to the many motorists who filled the t hotels and private homes to overflowing. Through the courtesy of the management* o£ tt\e Fox pavilion and John Con­ stantino's Rhythm Kings or­ chestra and sponsored by the American Legion, a big benefit dance will be held at the Fox pavilion July 22. The entire proceeds of this dance will be used in the replacement of the fire truck which was wrecked in the run made July 6 and also for the benefit of the three firemen who were badly in-* jured when answering the fire call. FORTY YEARS AGO / (Taken from the files of July 8, 1937) The carnival spirit prevailed in McHenry over the weekend as thousands of people came for miles from neighboring cities, towns and countryside to participate in the Fourth of July celebration and assist the McHenry Post o? the American Legion in putting on the largest and most successful event of the kind ever to take (dace in McHenry. The Fourth of July weekend was a busy one at the McHenry Country club with 487 visitors registered during the three days. About 750 golfers enjoyed the course during the holidays, including visitors and mem­ bers. Eugene Sayler celebrated the Fourth by winning the Pouse cup, defeating Willard Galitz 1 up in the thirty-six-hole finals. McHenry's basebai} team won a game on the Fourth of July from a coming yotthg team of Johnsburg boys by a 12 to 4 score, then dropped a hot battle on Monday to the Chicago Senators, a colored team, by a 5 to 1 count. "Spots" Thurwell was on the mound Sunday for the locals and had little trouble in winning his game. "Bud" Miller woriced a hard game for Johnsburg, but had trouble in hitting the corners. Tryouts for thCWLS Home Talent show will be held at the Eastern Star hall on July 15 and 16.* All talent is invited to be there as many singers, dan­ cers, musicians, etc., are needed. McHenry friends will be happy to learn that Sister Arcadia (Mary Blake), a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mathias Blake, wfll ob­ serve her fiftieth year in the convent on July 19. A High Mass will be read for her in­ tentions at St. Mary's Catholic church in this city next Saturday morning followed by breakfast at the A.P. Freund home for her six living brothers and three sisters. Sister Ar­ cadia was engaged in the teaching profession for forty- five years and for the past five years has been stationed\at Campbellsport, wis. \ The Volunteers of America^ will conduct their annual tag day on Friday, July 18, at the city hall, where Mrs. Betty Tuft will be in charge of workers. Young people are invited to lend their service in selling "hearts". Floyd Covalt of McHenry has been named to the county zoning board to replace Matt Laures of this city, who resigned because of poor health. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 13, 1967) A vote on location for the proposed new courthouse may be taken by the county board of supervisors at their next meeting in August. After considerable discussion at the Tuesday meeting this week, it was agreed 'to have the Building commission review the Annex and six other sites and present a recommendation at that time. The McHenry Township Fire Protection district has ex­ pressed considerable difficulty in locating residences due to inadequate street marking and house numbering in the various subdivisions. Residents are asked to remedy this situation so that firemen responding to an alarm may give the very finest 'service. The McHenry American Legion baseball team won its fifth league game Monday by downing Woodstock, 1 2-0, placing the local team in a tie for first place. Tim Freund was the winning pitcher for the McHenry team and allowed 5 hits, striking out 10. On Sunday, July 16, at 10:30 a.m., the Christian Science society of McHenry will hold its first service in the recently purchased church building located at Lincoln road and Eastwood lane (formerly Faith Presbyterian chruch). Mrs. Helen Creighton of Pistakee Bay, the First Reader, and Mrs. Anne E. Meyer of East­ wood Manor, Second Reader, will conduct the service.
