American Legion Auxiliary ISews The following members of McHenry Unit No. 491, American Legion auxiliary, Department of Illinois, at tended the fifty-seventh annual convention at the Pick- Congress hotel in Chicago July 7 through July 9: Outgoing president, Mrs. Margaret Datz; Americanism chairman and incoming 11th district president. Mrs. Lauretta Homo; Mrs. Midge Scharf, outgoing secretary ; incoming treasurer, Mrs. Dottie Messer; Mrs. Pearl Cooper, outgoing recording secretary and newly appointed corresponding secretary ; and president-elect, Mrs. Lydia Fenner. Special guests were Michael J. Bilandic, mayor of Chicago; department commander of the American Legion, Eugene Corum; Mrs. Margarite Adams, chapeau departmental, Eight and Forty; Mrs. Norman L. Sheehe, past department president and past national president; Mrs. Rae Shaw, past department president and past national president; Mrs. Paul Brown, national president, American Legion auxiliary; and guests of other veteran organizations. The McHenry unit was an nounced as being thirteenth in the state in veterans craft, having purchased $1,368.18 of veterans craft merchandise. Mrs. Tina Boeker is the Veteran's Craft chairman. The McHenry unit was in eighth place in high mem bership with 378 members. There are over 800 units in the Department of Illinois. •«* -i. . The press book, com munications chairmanship, made and compiled by Mrs. Cooper was one of five books in department competition, and took a second place personal award. Mrs. Cooper had previously won first place in the 11th district elimination and first place in the second division contest. The 11th district, McHenry's district, received many awards and honors. Mary Gorny ol Wheaton took first place with her 'Book of Prayers'; Reed Fry, sponsored by the St. Charles unit, received a fourth place award for his Americanism essay; Penny Griesmann of Batavia won a traveling trophy for the best promotion of the Americanism essay contest; the 11th district raised $2,000 for a Seeing Eye Dog, and Mrs. Grover (Carrie) Petrie, Uth district president of Elburn, with the help of the Elgin unit, was presented with a plaque for her efforts. Also, Dorothy Mersman of Lockport received an award for having had the most leadership courses; Mark Thompson of Glen Ellyn, national oratorical contest winner, was presented with an $8,000 scholarship; Becky Harm of Huntley took second place in the Class 4 Poppy poster contest; in the music chairmanship, the Best Song award was won by the West Chicago unit; Alice Kanaly of Marengo took first place for the best Unit Gold Star narrative report; and Mabel Schultz of Huntley took first place for the best district Gold Star narrative report. An impressive memorial service was held for the 889 deceased members of the Department of Illinois. This included eighty-seven Gold Star members, 110 charter members, a past department president, and two junior members. Tlje convention ended with the impressive and beautiful installation of the 1977-78 department officers. Mrs. John (Lucille) Acklin of Dolton was installed as the new depart ment president; Mrs. Sanford Patterson of Lincoln was in stalled as first vice-president; Mrs. Don (Margaret) Eckhardt of the Armington unit was installed as second vice- president; Rosemary Loparco of Chicago was installed as treasurer; and Mrs. A.J. (Margaret) Dorn of Mundelein will be the new department historian. During the installation, Mrs. Lauretta Homo, of the McHenry unit was installed as the new Uth district president, and Mrs. Mabel Schultz of the Huntley unit was installed as the second division president.
