PAGEt-PLAINPEALER-FRIDAY. JULY 22, lf77 Lake Villa Runner Tops Field In 4th Annual 7-Mile Road Race At GOP Golf Day It may have been pdWeal business, bat the relaxed appearance on the facet of Governor James Thompson, loft, and Senator Jack Schaffcr indicate their conversation may have been "monkey bmdneoo" as they enter into the fan of annual Republican day. About 800 persons defied the extreme heat as they gathered at the McHeury Country club Wednesday for GOP Golf day. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR More than 80 percent of Illinois' public water supplies are now in substantial com pliance with state water supply regulations and the remainder are working toward com pliance, according to the Illinois EPA. Women Netters Notch Third Straight Victory The Racket Club Women's Traveling Doubles team boosted its season record to 3-0, * defeating Valley Hills 7-5 although local participants dropped four of five matches. Only at No. 6 doubles could a McHenry participant earn a victory point. Anita Fink of .McHenry and Andree Faellaci of Crystal Lake earned the point, defeating Pauline Trimarco and Delores Reynolds 7-6, 6-4.. Otherwise, as far as local netters were concerned, the afternoon was a complete washout. / Playing No. 4 doubles, Barbara Gilpin of McHenry and Yvonne Hute of Crystal Lake lost to Ellen Roberts and Gail Russell 6-2, 6-2. No. 8 doubles found June D'Isa of McHenry and Betty Lippincott of Crystal Lake losing to Sue Hansen and Ginger Kadlec 6-1, 7-5. Gail Paulsen of McHenry and Barb Zimmerman of Cary lost to Jan Tecza and Maryaqn Kovacs 6-4,6-3 at No. 9 doubles, and at No. 12 doubles, Jan Rades and Marlene Moulis, both of McHenry, lost to Cathy Newcombe and Kathy Hannell 6-2, 6-3. The Racket Club also played a mixed doubles team match recently, losing to Turnberry 6- 5. The only local participant in the match was Mike Costigan of McHenry. Playing No. 2 men's doubles, he and Art Beck of Crystal Lake won their match 6-4, 6-3 over Lou Britt and Larry Durbin. Andy Oakley of McHenry is greeted at finish line of seven-mile race by Kelly Staley, first runnerup In the recent Miss McHenry contest, and Meg Humann, (arm extended) Miss Congeniality in the same contest, as he completes the fourth annual McHenry Road race in second place. Oakley is a former McHenry Ugh school cross-country runner, and now competes for Northwestern university in Evanston. The winner of the race was Joe Sheeran of Lake Villa. In photo at right, a McHenry Police squad car leads the pack of runners along the uneven terrain. Sheeran, at this early stage in the race, has already taken a lead-a margin he was to increase throughout the race. STAFF PHOTOS-WAYNE GAYLORD McHenry was well represented in a large crowd at the Ringwood church dinner last Sunday. Eating under the big tent gives one the feeling of being on a picnic. Everybody was stuffed and happy. This hot spell makes us realize how those unfortunate people out in Arizona must be suffering. After listening to baseball players, there 4s no question that this new fangled astroturf should be outlawed. For one thing, that artificial grass is too hot for humans to endure. Another thing - the lively ball sometimes hops 15 feet over an infielder's head just as he is about to field it. Some day somebody is going to have to come up with a different plan to settle labor- management disputes. It seemed like nothing could be worse than allowing garbage to pile up in hot weather. Now comes reports of hun dreds of bodies being stored awaiting the dignity of proper burial. There has to be a better way to settle contract disputes that will be fair to both sides. Joe Wagner finally admitted that the White Sox are doing "fairly well". From him, that's a high compliment. The All-Star game is over and it might be a good time for me to get out of town for a few days. John Busscher will thoroughly enjoy collecting another bet from this stalwart American League fan. He wouldn't give odds. The big difference came with the fact that only one White Sox player was on the team. And it was Richie Zisk who put the fire under his team. Anyhow, we scared, 'em! The fourth annual seven-mile McHenry Road race Tuesday evening turned out to be a family affair for a brother- sister, duo from Lake Villa, with 19-year-old Joe Sheeran and his younger sister, Wendy, being the first man and girl across the finish line. A total of seventy-three runners in various age groups competed in heat pushing toward 95-degrees, and when it was over, Sheeran claimed the Men's Open division title by negotiating the hilly course in 37:42, two and one-half minutes in front of Andy Oakley of McHenry. t ,, Sheeran's time was just one minute off the course record, set in 1975. Dan Skarda of Mundelein finished third in 41:19, and he, like Oakley and Sheeran, competed ip the Open division. The fourth place finisher, and winner of the Master division, for men age 40-up, was Dick Kloepfer, the cross-country coach at Crystal Lake high school. He navigated the run from the city park to Johnsburg and back in 42:36. After Oakley, the next best area finish was Kevin Weisenberger of Wonder Lake, who finished second in the Junior and Senior high school division and eighth overall in 47:47. Bobbie Hall of Wonder Lake was the only runner in the Girls Open division, and finished the run in 56:29. Sheeran's sister, Wendy, won the Girls high school division in 54:53. Chris Dixon and Gerry Baczkowski of McHenry finished one-two in the Boys Frosh-Soph high school division, and Beth Baczkowski of McHenry finished a close second in the Girls junior higjb school division.
