The common carp fits the niche very nicely. Summer heat doesn't really seem to affect carp when it comes to feeding. One of the best things about carp fishing is that you don't have to hunt all over the lake for them. In fact, by using a method recommended by Mercury out- boards' fishing experts, it's possible to make them come to you. All it takes is a large cloth sack, some dogfood and corn, and a little patience. Pick a place where you can fish in the shade. Pour several pounds of dry dogfood into the cloth bag and add a large rock as weight. Tie the top of the bag closed, leaving enough rope to reach from the lake bottom to the surface. Attach a plastic jug to act as a marker buoy and throw the whole works overboard. Before leaving, empty a can of whole kernel corn into the water right over the bag. After baiting your carp hole this way, wait at least several hours before returning to fish. The corn acts as a magnet, drawing carp to the area. And the dogfood keeps them there after they've eaten all the corn. Carp will suck the dogfood from the bag. It's a slow pro cess and will help hold the fish in the area for some time.
